Job description

The Village was one of the first agencies in the country to provide homes for neglected children.  Today, we continue to achieve our mission “to build a community of strong, healthy families who protect and nurture children” by providing a full range of behavioral health, early childhood and youth development, substance use treatment and support services for children, adults and families in the Greater Hartford, Connecticut region.  In order to accomplish this, we hire the most qualified, experienced staff and support creativity and innovation so that we can come up with solutions that work.  We are about lasting, sustainable change for individuals and families today and communities tomorrow.

With a strong commitment to workforce development, The Village sponsors internships for students who are enrolled in undergraduate and graduate degree programs in the social work, counseling, nursing, and administrative fields. Our interns come from a variety of colleges and universities in and around New England.

Acceptance is based upon the availability of supervision in the student's area of interest, prior experience and learning needs. Referrals are accepted from January 1 to June 1 for internships that start in September and end in May. There may be a limited number of summer block placements, given both programmatic and supervisory availability.

  • Work or volunteer experience with children, adults and/or families
  • Recommendation from their school program
  • Interview

  • Individual/group supervision by MSW, LCSW, MA or other clinically licensed professionals for all clinical work or individual/group supervision by a professional staff member whose degree is commensurate with the program requirements
  • Access to a diverse array of agency-sponsored training opportunities
  • Use of recorded sessions in supervision for self-reflection and training purposes for graduate internships

Diverse Experiences

  • Research or program evaluation
  • Short- and long-term therapy
  • Home-based programs
  • Early childhood, child, adolescent, adult, couples and family work

Process

The internship training program relies on the ability of program areas and their supervisors to accommodate the academic needs of each student and provide a rich learning environment that supports both the student and the program area.  Interviewing, matching and agency agreements are all a part of the process and are conducted through the training program. The internship program also provides opportunities for staff who are interested in pursuing an advanced degree.
