Job description

Summary
The International Trade Advisor provides support for all aspects of international trade compliance and advisory matters managed by attorneys in the Energy, Environmental, Mining & Transportation practice. Primary responsibilities lie in the areas of regulatory monitoring, trade compliance program implementation, import/export data analysis, trade classification, filings and submissions, and training and process improvement. The International Trade Advisor works under the direct supervision of attorneys in the practice area on a day-to-day basis, ensuring compliance with U.S. import/export laws and regulations, supporting client matters, and meeting billable hour requirements.

Required Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • 3-7+ years of experience in international trade, policy, or regulatory advisory.
  • 10 or more years of experience in import and compliance.
  • In depth understanding of ITAR, EAR import, and sanctions regulations.
  • Strong data analytic skills and problem-solving ability.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to handle complex information accurately.
  • Working knowledge of trade compliance software.

Preferred Education & Experience
  • S. Licensed Customs Broker (LCB) preferred.
  • Experience working in a law firm, consulting firm, government, or corporate trade function.

Essential Functions

  • Regulatory Monitoring & Advisory (25%)
    • Continuous monitoring of U.S. import/export/sanctions laws and regulations, including the regulations of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the Export Administration Regulations, the International Traffic in Arms Regulations, and the U.S. sanctions regulations administered by the Office of Foreign Assets Control.
    • Draft responses to Customs or other governmental agency inquiries and requests for information.
  • Trade Compliance & Risk Management (35%)
    • Develop and implement trade compliance programs.
    • Conduct review and audits of import entries, preparation of post entry corrections, and implementation of corrective actions, including in the areas of tariff classification, valuation, country of origin, marking requirements, and preferential trade agreement eligibility.
    • Conduct reviews and audits of export transactions, including preparation of prior disclosures and voluntary self-disclosures of apparent import and export violations.
    • Conduct denied party screening and due diligence.
    • Prepare technology control plans and procedures for ensuring controlled technical data/technology are properly authorized.
    • Conduct training on import and export compliance.
  • Trade Operations & Filings (20%)
    • Review and analyze import and export data in ACE to identify trends or gaps.
    • Conduct trade classification, including Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) and Export Control Classification Number (ECCN).
    • Prepare and submit binding rulings and CCATS applications.
    • Prepare and submit export license applications and other requests for authorization.
    • Draft and implement recommendations to improve compliance processes, systems, and increase efficiencies, such as work instructions, checklists, forms, and standard operating procedures.
  • General and Administrative (25%)
  • Meet billable hour requirement of 1550 per year.
  • Time entry, scanning, e-mailing, etc.
  • Assist in Firm marketing for practice area.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

The salary range for this role is $100,000 - $150,000. The salary range for this position is based on a variety of factors, including experience, skills, qualifications, and location. The range is provided as an initial approximation at the time of posting and may vary based on the individual's unique qualifications and experience.
