Job description

SUMMARY
We are seeking a highly experienced and financially sophisticated professional to lead and manage complex insurance strategies at Welltower. This role will be responsible for structuring, negotiating and optimizing insurance programs and our risk management function, with a particular focus on complex risk scenarios and aligning with broader financial objectives. The ideal candidate brings deep experience in commercial real estate insurance and/or healthcare operations insurance, strong analytical and financial acumen and a proven ability to navigate nuanced and high-stakes insurance matters, including captive insurance matters. This position can be based out of our Toledo, OH, Dallas, TX or New York, NY office.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Insurance Programs Procurement and Management
  • Effectively manage and lead the risk management team personnel.
  • Responsible for annual renewals and bidding processes for all insurance lines, such as property, GL/PL, D&O, executive risk (cyber), pollution, auto, etc
  • Oversee the management of property and GL/PL captive solutions (claims management, accounting/payment of claims, managing relationship with captive manager).
  • Manage relationships with operators regarding coverage, claims and participation in captive programs
  • Partner with legal, asset management, and operations teams on risk exposure and claims resolution.
  • Manage and maintain strong relationships with insurance brokers, carriers, reinsurers, captive managers, and third-party advisors.
  • Present insurance strategy, captive performance, and risk insights to senior leadership and, as appropriate, board-level stakeholders.

Captive Insurance Program Management
  • Lead the strategy, structure, and ongoing management of the company's captive insurance program(s), ensuring alignment with enterprise risk and financial objectives.
  • Evaluate opportunities to expand captive utilization, including new lines of coverage, increased retention, and capital efficiency initiatives.
  • Oversee captive financial performance, including capitalization, reserving, premium allocation, and dividend strategy.
  • Partner with actuarial advisors to assess loss projections, pricing adequacy, and reserve sufficiency.
  • Coordinate with tax, accounting, and legal teams to ensure regulatory compliance and optimal structuring of captive entities.
  • Manage relationships with captive managers, regulators, auditors, and domiciles.
  • Integrate captive strategy into overall total cost of risk (TCOR) optimization and long-term capital planning.

Financial & Analytical Leadership
  • Integrate insurance strategy into broader financial planning, capital allocation, and underwriting decisions.
  • Analyze total cost of risk (TCOR), including premiums, deductibles, self-insured retentions, captive participation, and claims trends.
  • Support investment and asset management teams with insurance diligence for acquisitions, dispositions, and financings.
  • Model financial impact of insurance structures, including risk retention and captive utilization strategies.

COMPETENCIES
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze data and identify potential risks. Direct experience with captive insurance, re-insurance, and financial acumen in underwriting insurance programs is highly desirable.
  • Deep expertise in complex insurance structures (property, casualty, professional liability, cyber, etc.).
  • Proven ability to manage large-scale, multi-layered insurance programs and complex claims.
  • Proficiency in general IT applications and software.
  • Strong project planning and management skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail in assessing and addressing risk factors.
  • Proven ability to gather information through research and data analysis.
  • Outstanding time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent negotiation, analytical and communication skills.
  • Previous experience with international operations is preferred, as it will provide valuable insights into managing risks across different jurisdictions
  • Experience in healthcare or seniors housing real estate is a plus.

TRAVEL
Some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
A minimum of 10-15 years of experience in risk management and compliance is required.
A bachelor's degree in relevant field is required. Advanced degree (MBA, JD or Master's) is preferred. Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check, drug screening, and verification of employment, education, and other credentials relevant to the position.
