About the Role:

Our Property Team is looking for an international property underwriter with recognized experience and visibility in the Chicago Commercial Property insurance market and a successful track record in underwriting both global and domestic large, enterprise-sized corporations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage a portfolio of accounts including fronted global property programs
  • Analyze and underwrite exposures including Natural Catastrophe hazards
  • Assess technical insurability regarding exposures and coverages on new offer and renewal submissions
  • Prepare quotations, structure programs, and offer proposals in accordance with guidelines
  • Use Swiss Re tools and systems for the development of terms and conditions
  • Enter and maintain risk information into the various information systems and administer the accounts
  • Establish and maintain a book of business as well as marketing and originating prospects
  • Coach less experienced underwriters when necessary
  • Lead internal (technical/organizational) and/or external (market/client development) projects
  • Represent Swiss Reย in meetings with clients, brokers, and other Swiss Re Group entities
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers, clients and team members
  • Technical analysis of manmade and Nat Cat property exposures as well as policy terms and pricing metrics
  • Structuring capacity deployment and negotiating key terms that align with our underwriting strategy

About the Team:

We are a diverse and inclusive team that works well in a collaborative environment while fostering and developing independent thought. Our team works with brokers situated in the Central Region of the United States. North American Retail Property is a foundational line of business for SwissRe Corporate Solutions that is at the core of our strong brand. Risk transfer solutions offered through this channel vary from ground up quota share, shared and layered, and single carrier placements. This team also works with our alternative risk transfer group to structure innovative and unique solutions for our clients and brokers.ย 

About You:

You are a strong communicator, able to build partnerships with external customers and internal co-workers. You are an initiative-taker, with the ability to thrive in a dynamic, team-focused environment, and deliver on tight deadlines. You are a strong negotiator, results oriented, and take responsibility for your decisions. ย We expect you to have the following business experience and skills:

  • Minimum of 4-10 years' experience as an underwriter (of medium to large corporate accounts)
  • Experience in the structuring and fronting of global programs preferred.ย 
  • Experience working with Captives a plus
  • Knowledge of complex shared and layered program structures as well as 100% Single Carrier business
  • Skills working across diverse occupancies including heavy manufacturing preferred
  • In depth knowledge of insurance and commercial property underwriting in the central region
  • Proficiency in the use of underwriting tools, applications, and guidelines
  • Strong broker and client network in the local region
  • Solid experience and understanding of Nat Cat and man-made risk management and loss prevention
  • Negotiating skills and the ability to handle multiple deals in parallel

Some travel within the region, including air travel, for client/broker meetings will be required. The role is located in our Chicago, IL office. Swiss Re has a hybrid work model where the expectation is that you will be in the office three days per week. The estimated base salary range for the Senior Underwriter level is $156,000 to $234,000. The specific salary offered for this or any given role will take into account a number of factors including but not limited to job location, scope of role, qualifications, complexity, specialization/scarcity of talent, experience, education, and employer budget. ย At Swiss Re, we take a "total compensation approach" when making compensation decisions. This means that we consider all components of compensation in their totality (such as base pay, short-and long-term incentives, and benefits offered), in setting individual compensation.
