Job description

The International Trade Analyst provides analysis and other support services for attorneys in the International Trade practice group. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in international trade and a demonstrated desire to work as a team with subject matter experts to help clients manage and understand trade data, navigate trade compliance issues, and solve legal and logistical problems. This is a position for an individual with the curiosity and desire to learn about international trade and the technical details associated with the importation of merchandise and compliance with sanctions and export control regulations. The person selected for this position must have advanced data analysis experience and be capable of working in a high-demand and dynamic environment. After an initial period of in-office training, this position is eligible for a hybrid-remote work schedule.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Data analysis in Microsoft Excel and Power BI.
    • Intakes, manipulates, analyzes, and visually represents large volumes of data and prepares reports in Microsoft Excel, Power BI, and various other proprietary analytics tools, including the calculation of distinct measures requiring the incorporation of data from different and disparate sources.
  • Due diligence support and analysis.
    • Retrieves, analyzes, and summarizes publicly available information and proprietary screening reports from compliance databases to identify politically exposed persons (PEP), sanctioned ownership, and prohibited country connections related to U.S., UK, and EU economic sanctions and export control programs.
  • Tariff classification.
    • Identifies merchandise classification for import and export, including a scientific level of detail about the material composition and function of various goods.
  • Attorney support.
    • Assists attorneys as part of a collaborative team with various types of compliance audits and reviews, preparation of government filings, reports to clients, and initial preparation of international trade process-flow descriptions and compliance manuals.
  • Documentation and recordkeeping support.
    • Maintains and organizes documentation associated with investigations, penalty actions, filings and disclosures.
  • Administrative and Judicial Filings.
    • Prepares and submits filings at the Court of International Trade and Administrative agencies, as well as filings to those on the service list for those proceedings.
  • Timekeeping and billing support.
    • Accurately records, maintains, and submits billable and non-billable time entries in accordance with firm policies, ensuring time is entered contemporaneously and supporting billing deadlines.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze, interpret, and present complex data using a statistical and analytical mindset.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including advanced formulas, pivot tables, data validation, conditional formatting, dashboard creation, and large dataset management are required.
  • Ability to think critically and solve complex problems through data analysis, statistical reasoning, pattern recognition, and logical decision-making.
  • Must be comfortable working with large datasets and identifying trends, anomalies, and actionable insights.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, or a willingness to learn, merchandise classification for import and export.
  • Exceptional attention to detail with the ability to organize, analyze, and interpret complex information while managing multiple concurrent projects.
  • Demonstrated intellectual curiosity and the ability to learn complex technical subject matter quickly.
  • Must be comfortable working with scientific, engineering, regulatory, or other highly technical concepts in support of the firm's International Trade practice.
  • Ability to process routine daily functions while being able to resolve sensitive issues and complex assignments utilizing above average critical thinking skills.

Education and Experience Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably in Business, International Trade, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Data Analytics, Economics, or another analytical or science-related discipline.
  • Customs Broker License a plus but not required.
  • Two or more years of experience in international trade compliance and/or financial services due diligence required.
  • Demonstrated experience working with complex datasets, database management, advanced spreadsheet analysis, reporting, or business intelligence tools is strongly preferred.
  • Expert-level proficiency in Microsoft Excel is required, including experience with advanced formulas, pivot tables, conditional formatting, data visualization, dashboards, and analyzing large or complex datasets.
  • Experience with Power BI or other business intelligence/reporting tools is highly desirable.
