Overview
The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, located on the George H. Cook Campus, is one of the largest schools of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. We pursue excellence in research, teaching, and outreach in areas of study that address the biological spectrum from molecules to ecosystems. Our emphasis is on both the fundamental sciences and the social and human dimensions. We offer 21 undergraduate majors, including plant and animal sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture and food systems, landscape architecture, food and nutritional sciences, ecology and evolution, marine science and oceanography, environmental sciences and meteorology, human ecology, entomology, and environmental economics.
In addition to instruction in the classroom, field, and laboratory, our students have opportunities for experiential learning on and off campus, including a growing emphasis on international experiences through short- and long-term study abroad. Students also have access to a robust program of applied research and outreach hosted by the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station laboratories, farms, business incubators, and marine stations throughout the state
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Professional/Research/Manager (Seasonal) for the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. The Professional/Research/Manager (Seasonal) will conduct and lead GC/MS analysis in support of a wide variety of research projects, as well as to conduct HPLC and other tests with aromatic plants relative to quality control. This research will focus on basil, mint, catnip, oregano, hemp and other spices in support of genetics and breeding, and in evaluating the aroma volatile expression as a result of different abiotic and biotic stressors and environments.
Among the key duties of the position are the following:
  • Sets up protocols for plant sampling, preparation and compound analysis with a focus on compound identification.
  • Manages and coordinates the GC/MS analytics in the lab including its maintenance and care.
  • Leads the preparation of technical and scientific reports with aroma compounds.
  • Teaches and mentors graduate students in GC/MS analysis.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
  • Master's degree in Plant Biology, Chemistry, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Five years or more of experience in program management of international projects and food quality systems (e.g., HACCP, PCQUI).

Certifications/Licenses
  • A valid driver's license would be required for this position.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Demonstrated analytical experience in assessing chemistry of herbs and spices via GC/MS, HPLC, among other analytical tests.
  • Demonstrated track record in scientific and grant writing as well as in technical report preparation, and development of presentations to scientific and industrial and commercial producer offices.
