Position Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Architectural Project Manager to join our New York studio. This role is pivotal in leading complex architectural projects from concept through completion. The ideal candidate will bring deep knowledge of the design and construction process, strong client relationship skills, and a track record of successful team leadership and project delivery.

As a Project Manager, you will oversee day-to-day project operations, guide multidisciplinary teams, manage consultant coordination, and ensure high-quality outcomes that align with client goals, budget parameters, and HLW’s design standards. You will serve as the primary client contact and lead the strategic execution of projects, managing scope, schedules, and financial performance while mentoring internal staff.

Job Responsibilities

Client & Project Leadership

  • Act as the primary point of contact for clients, cultivating long-term relationships through proactive communication and reliable project delivery.
  • Lead the development of comprehensive project execution plans, including scope definition, scheduling, resource allocation, and fee structuring.
  • Drive project pursuits and proposal efforts, including the preparation of qualifications, fee proposals, and negotiation of contract terms in coordination with firm leadership.
  • Represent HLW in client presentations, stakeholder meetings, and public forums, exemplifying the firm’s dedication to design excellence and strategic partnership.
  • Continuously nurture client relationships to support ongoing collaboration, repeat engagements, and broader business development initiatives.

Project Management & Execution

  • Manage all phases of project delivery, from planning and design through documentation, bidding, and construction administration.
  • Oversee internal project teams, consultants, and contractors to ensure alignment with design intent, schedule milestones, and contractual obligations.
  • Track deliverables, decisions, and project issues; facilitate resolution and ensure timely documentation.
  • Conduct on-site observations, review submittals and RFIs, and monitor construction progress to ensure quality and compliance.

Financial Oversight

  • Manage project budgets, forecasts, and profitability with support from HLW’s finance team.
  • Review and approve invoices, manage change orders, and ensure financial accountability throughout the project lifecycle.

Team Leadership & Coordination

  • Manage project schedules, budgets, and work plans, ensuring cost control and timely completion.
  • Lead internal and external project team meetings, fostering collaboration and efficiency.
  • Coordinate with clients, consultants, contractors, and internal teams to align project goals and expectations.
  • Ensure project quality control reviews are conducted in coordination with the Studio Technical Director.
  • Guide and mentor junior architects and project team members to support professional growth.

Role Qualifications

Education & Licensure

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Architecture or related field.
  • Licensed Architect preferred (U.S. registration).
  • LEED AP, WELL AP, CPHD, or other sustainability credentials preferred.

Experience

  • 10 – 20 years of progressively responsible experience in architectural practice, including at least 5 years in a project management role.
  • Proven success managing large, complex projects across multiple typologies (commercial, workplace, institutional, etc.).
  • Experience working in a collaborative, multidisciplinary design environment.

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in Revit, Adobe Creative Suite, and presentation tools.
  • Familiarity with Deltek, Microsoft Project, OneNote, Excel, SharePoint, Microsoft Teams and Newforma, and other project management platforms a plus.
  • Solid understanding of local building codes, zoning regulations, ADA requirements, and construction processes.
