What Do Interns Do?

Internships are opportunities sought by high school or college students and recent graduates to gain experience with a company or in a field that may cultivate your interest further and possibly lead to future employment. Interns do a wide variety of things, depending on the field and type of organization of their assignment. For example, a lab intern may clean and sterilize equipment, while a marketing intern may perform administrative tasks to help prepare reports and presentations. Internships are typically short-term, ranging from a few weeks to a year.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Intern, you need a foundational understanding of the relevant field, strong academic performance, and a willingness to learn. Familiarity with essential office software like Microsoft Office or Google Workspace, and sometimes basic knowledge of industry-specific tools, is often expected. Strong communication, adaptability, and teamwork skills help interns stand out and integrate smoothly into professional environments. These skills and qualities are crucial for maximizing learning opportunities, contributing to projects, and making a positive impression during the internship.

What can I expect in terms of mentorship and feedback during an internship?

As an intern, you can typically expect to receive structured mentorship and regular feedback from your supervisor or designated mentor. Interns often participate in scheduled check-ins, receive guidance on projects, and are encouraged to ask questions to enhance their learning. Many organizations also provide formal performance reviews at the midpoint and end of the internship to help interns understand their strengths and areas for growth. This supportive environment is designed to foster professional development and facilitate a smooth transition into the workplace.

What are interns?

Interns are typically students or recent graduates who work temporarily at an organization to gain practical experience in a specific field. They often assist with tasks, learn from professionals, and develop skills relevant to their future careers. Internships can be paid or unpaid and may last from a few weeks to several months. This experience can be valuable for building a resume and networking for future job opportunities.

Job description

Intern Enterprise Network Engineering

Requisition Number: 19864 Contract Type: Internship/trainee Location(s): Chicago, IL, US

Intern Enterprise Network Engineering The job responsibilities outlined in this document are not exhaustive and may evolve over time and be reviewed according to business needs. ROLE DESCRIPTION SUMMARY We are seeking a motivated Intern to join our engineering team, where he will play a key role in maintaining the high standards of our technical operations. This position is designed to provide a balance of operational support and deep-dive learning; Intern will assist the team with comprehensive technical documentation and provide hands-on support for daily workflow requirements. Beyond administrative tasks, this internship offers a unique vantage point into the core architectural functions of our group. By the end of the program, Intern will have gained practical, real-world experience with Service Provider-grade networking technologies, preparing him for a career in large-scale infrastructure.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES / KEY RESULT AREAS
  • Network Documentation & Visualization
    • Topology Mapping: Audit existing site records and engineer comprehensive network topology diagrams for sites currently lacking documentation. You will ensure that physical and logical connectivity is accurately represented.
    • Asset Management: Utilize IPAM (IP Address Management) tools to manage global IP address blocks, ensuring high data integrity across our infrastructure records.
  • Circuit Lifecycle & Automation
    • Network Orchestration: Gain hands-on experience with Cisco NSO (Network Services Orchestrator) to automate the activation and decommissioning of circuits, moving beyond manual CLI configurations.
    • Project Support: Work directly with the Core Engineering team on a high-priority Circuit Consolidation Project, identifying redundancies and optimizing network paths.
  • Cloud Connectivity & Peering
    • Hybrid Cloud Integration: Research and assist in the management of Azure ExpressRoute and AWS Direct Connect circuits.
    • Peering Optimization: Support the team in consolidating Azure peering points across the service provider network to reduce latency and improve transit efficiency.
  • Network Hygiene & Resource Recovery
    • IP Reclamation: Identify and recover "stale" SWIP (Shared Whois Project) records and subnets.
    • Audit & Compliance: Systematically audit customer assignments to reclaim subnets from legacy accounts or customers no longer in service, ensuring efficient utilization of IPv4/IPv6 resources.
COMPETENCIES

Foundational Networking Knowledge OSI Model & TCP/IP, Routing protocols Subnetting: Proficiency in IPv4 and IPv6 subnetting (CIDR notation) is essential for the IPAM and SWIP recovery tasks.

Cloud & Automation Awareness Cloud Fundamentals: Basic knowledge of Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) like AWS or Azure. Understanding the concept of "Direct Connect" or "ExpressRoute" as a private bridge to the cloud.

Technical Documentation Diagramming Tools: Experience with (or ability to quickly learn) tools like Microsoft Visio, Lucidchart, or Draw.io to create professional network topologies.

Core Professional Competencies Attention to Detail (High Priority) Since the intern will be managing IP address blocks and decommissioning circuits, they must be meticulous. Small errors in IP management can lead to larger routing issues. Analytical Problem Solving The ability to look at "stale" records or disconnected data points and investigate whether a resource is truly ready for recovery or still in use. Continuous Learning Mindset The networking field moves fast. We are looking for someone eager to bridge the gap between academic theory and the complex, real-world "messiness" of a service provider network. Effective Communication Ability to collaborate with the core engineering team and clearly document technical changes so that other engineers can follow their work.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or Network Engineering. Study or certification progress toward a AWS, Azure or CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate). Basic experience with Linux command lines.
