Applied Optimization (AO) Job Description

Job Title: Applied Mathematics & Statistics Intern              Reports to: Principal Scientist
FLSA Status: Part-Time (Non-Exempt)                                  Department: Space Science
Position Objective:
  • To support an interdisciplinary team that develops new generation scientific algorithms in space science through mathematical modeling, statistical analysis, applications of machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques, and implements these into numerical analysis and software deliverables to our customers.
Essential Functions:
  • Support the development and testing of mathematical models of real data
  • Support the implementation of mathematical formulae and algorithms into software code
  • Support hypothesis testing through statistical analysis methods to analyze and interpret effectiveness of algorithms
  • Support modifying and debugging code
  • Perform verification and quality assurance for new and existing mathematical algorithms and code
  • Help prepare and review presentations, papers, and reports to convey statistical analysis, mathematical modeling, and software development to customers
  • Ensure accuracy of your work and follow procedures in documenting work; maintain notebook of daily activities and provide weekly reports of work
  • Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
  • Undergraduate or graduate student currently enrolled in a program related to the field of mathematics or statistics with a superior academic record
  • Basic understanding of software development and knowledge of various programming languages
  • Attention to detail and effective time and schedule management skills
  • Effective organizing, planning, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to adapt within a small team to support evolving customer requirements
  • Ability to adapt between and balance work falling under a range of research topics including additive manufacturing, space research, and optics
  • Ability to execute instructions and communication in written, oral, and diagram form
  • Demonstrated strong writing, fact-gathering, and analytical skills
  • Basic computer skills including, but not necessarily limited to, Microsoft Office products (e.g., Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
Preferred Qualifications:
  • College sophomore or higher with cumulative GPA (Grade Point Average) of 3.5 or higher
  • A minor or dual degree in computer science or computer engineering
  • Theoretic knowledge and experience of Agile software development practices and UML
  • Knowledge or experience in Python, MATLAB, and/or C++ programming languages
  • Knowledge or experience in Git management and use for collaborative projects
  • Experience with machine learning, artificial intelligence, and numerical optimization techniques
Citizenship/Security Clearance Requirements:
  • U.S. Citizen or Green Card Holder
  • May be required to obtain and maintain U.S. Government Security Clearance
About Our Internships:
  • Hours: The internship is a part-time, year-round position that requires a minimum of sixteen hours per week of work. The hours are flexible and they can change from one semester to another based on the student’s class schedule. The weekly hours can be adjusted to balance for the examinations, tests, and project submissions.

  • In-office attendance is required; remote work is not available at this time.
