Job description

PASSION + TRUST + OUTWARD MINDSET + EVOLUTION + MASTERY + OWNERSHIP

At KL&A Engineers and Builders, we believe great projects start with strong collaboration. Our teams combine engineering expertise with a deep understanding of construction to deliver practical, innovative solutions. We’re building a new Integrated Services Team focused on supporting construction-driven projects, and we’re looking for a Project Engineer who is excited to help shape and grow this effort.

The Opportunity

We are seeking an Integrated Design Project Engineer for our new Integrated Services Team—a group of engineers dedicated to supporting construction-driven projects with high-quality, technically sound design services. This role focuses on executing and leading the technical production of projects, ensuring accuracy, constructability, and efficiency, while working closely with internal design staff and KL&A’s construction managers.

The Integrated Services Team supports steel fabricators, steel detailers, timber providers, building system developers, and general contractors with timely, cost-effective solutions. By separating architecturally driven and construction-driven projects into distinct team structures, we improve delivery, reduce disruptions, and expand opportunities for engineers to gain expertise in design/build practices.

Project Engineer Responsibilities

  • Serve as the day-to-day technical lead for construction-focused design projects.
  • Perform structural analysis, design, and documentation for steel, timber, and hybrid structural systems.
  • Oversee and coordinate drawing production, ensuring quality, constructability, and efficiency.
  • Delegate technical tasks to Design Engineers, provide mentorship, and perform first-level quality control.
  • Work closely with Project Managers to align design strategies with budgets, schedules, and project goals.
  • Coordinate internally with construction managers and steel detailers to ensure smooth integration of design and construction workflows.
  • Identify and solve technical challenges proactively, providing practical solutions for construction-driven projects.
  • Support client coordination when needed, under the direction of the Project Manager.

Example Projects

  • Structural design support for steel and mass timber construction projects.
  • Delegated design of stairs, rails, rooftop unit frames, mass timber components, and other building systems.
  • Pedestrian bridge design for detailing partners.
  • Gap-scope design tasks that support both construction and architecturally driven projects.

Qualifications

  • ABET-accredited degree in Structural or Architectural Engineering.
  • Engineer Intern (EI/EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) licensure (or ability to obtain).
  • Minimum 4 years of structural design experience, ideally including construction-driven or delegated design projects.
  • Strong knowledge of steel and timber design principles.
  • Eligibility to work in the US without sponsorship, both presently and in the future.

Bonus Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in Revit Structures.
  • Experience with RAM and/or RISA analysis models.
  • Background in design-build or delegated design projects.

To Be Successful

  • Bring passion for construction-driven design and integrated project delivery.
  • Focus on technical excellence and production efficiency.
  • Communicate effectively with teammates, especially construction managers and detailers.
  • Balance accuracy with responsiveness to construction timelines.
  • Mentor junior staff while continuing to build your own expertise.
  • Approach challenges with humility, curiosity, and a problem-solving mindset.

Salary: $90,000 – $110,000 annually
