Intern Project Engineer information

What does an intern project engineer do?

An Intern Project Engineer supports engineering teams by assisting in the planning, design, and execution of projects. Typical tasks may include preparing project documentation, coordinating between departments, conducting site visits, and performing data analysis. The role is designed to give students or recent graduates practical experience in engineering project management while working under the supervision of experienced engineers. Intern Project Engineers learn industry standards, develop technical skills, and gain insight into the project's lifecycle from conception to completion.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect as an intern project engineer?

As an Intern Project Engineer, you can expect to assist in coordinating engineering project activities, such as preparing technical documentation, supporting senior engineers with design or site visits, and tracking project progress. Interns often work alongside multidisciplinary teams, gaining exposure to project management processes, client communication, and problem-solving in real-world scenarios. The role is hands-on and offers valuable experience in applying engineering principles, making it a great stepping stone for a full-time engineering career.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intern project engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Intern Project Engineer, you need a foundational knowledge in engineering principles, problem-solving abilities, and academic progress toward a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD software, project management tools, and basic understanding of industry-specific codes or standards is often expected. Strong communication, teamwork, and a willingness to learn help you stand out in collaborative project environments. These skills and qualities are crucial for effectively supporting project teams, learning on the job, and contributing to successful project outcomes.

Job description

Pennoni is seeking an Engineering Intern to join our Leesburg, VA office and support a variety of public and private land development projects throughout the region. This is an excellent opportunity for a civil engineering student to gain hands-on exposure to site layout, grading, utility design, stormwater management, permitting, construction documents, and engineering reports while working closely with experienced engineers and project managers. In this role, you will support project teams through various stages of design, from early planning and conceptual layouts through detailed design and permitting support.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Assist project engineers with the preparation of civil engineering plans for public and private land development projects.
  • Support site design tasks, including site layout, grading, stormwater management, erosion and sediment control, and utility design.
  • Help prepare permit application materials, exhibits, calculations, and supporting documentation for agency review.
  • Assist with reviewing local municipal ordinances, county requirements, and state regulations applicable to assigned project tasks.
  • Contribute to engineering reports by organizing technical information and documenting project assumptions, design criteria, and regulatory requirements.
  • Work in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary team environment under the guidance of experienced engineers and project managers.
  • Additional tasks may be assigned, as needed.

Required Qualifications:
Enrollment in a Civil Engineering or related engineering program, such as Environmental Engineering or Construction Engineering, at an ABET-accredited institution. Candidates should have completed or be actively pursuing coursework related to site/civil design, land development, water resources, transportation, utilities, or related civil engineering topics.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior internship, co-op, academic project, or work experience related to land development, site/civil design, stormwater management, water resources, utilities, or construction is a plus.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD Civil 3D, Bluebeam Revu, and related engineering or design tools.
  • Proficiency with basic office software applications, especially Microsoft Office 365 and Adobe PDF applications.
  • Exposure to stormwater management design concepts, erosion and sediment control, grading, utility design, or Hydrology and Hydraulics (H&H) coursework is helpful.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and willingness to learn in a fast-paced project environment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, ask questions, take direction, and work both independently and as part of a team.

Why Pennoni?
Founded more than 50 years ago, Pennoni is a multi-disciplinary consulting engineering firm with a long-standing commitment to delivering practical solutions for public and private clients.
