The Step Up program provides supplementary funds for undergraduate students enrolled at the University of Utah who are completing unpaid internships, either on-campus or with off-campus organizations. In addition to satisfactorily completing the requirements of the internship, Step Up interns will create documentation about their internships to be shared with U of U students through social channels, websites, newsletters, and other media. Options may include video, podcasts, and/or blogs describing the experiential benefits of interning.
Students are responsible for locating and being selected for their internships before acceptance for Step Up. For help applying for internships, make an appointment with your career coach at https://careers.utah.edu/meet-your-coaches/. Internships must be within the state of Utah, and work must be performed in person.
Responsibilities
General Responsibilities
  1. Be accepted to an unpaid in-person internship in the State of Utah.
  2. Satisfactorily complete the requirements of the internship.
  3. Participate in the Step Up Canvas course and complete a final project.
    a. Sign a media release.
    b. Provide a brief bio and photo.
    c. Final project options: A blog entry of 500+ words with accompanying photos describing the internship and the value it has contributed to your career exploration; a "Hey U" podcast interview in Garff 1300; other options you propose which are approved in advance by Step Up leaders.
    d. Discuss your final project with your career coach and submit your written proposal on Canvas by September 29, 2025.
    e. Submit your final project by November 14, 2025.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be current U of U student.
  • Must not work outside of the State of Utah (including remotely).
  • This internship is work-study eligible. However, it is open to all students, regardless of work-study status.
  • Step-Up Internship funding is available to international students working in unpaid on-campus internships only.

Preference is given to students with internships within non-profit and social impact focused organizations.
