Intern Inventory Management information

What does an intern in inventory management do?

An Intern in Inventory Management assists with tracking, organizing, and controlling a company’s inventory of goods and materials. Their responsibilities often include updating inventory records, helping to conduct physical counts, and supporting the team in analyzing stock levels. They may also work with inventory management software and help identify opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce costs. This role provides valuable hands-on experience in supply chain and logistics operations.

What are some common challenges faced by interns in inventory management, and how can they be overcome?

Interns in Inventory Management often encounter challenges such as learning new inventory software, maintaining accuracy under tight deadlines, and understanding complex supply chain processes. To overcome these, it's helpful to proactively ask questions, seek guidance from experienced team members, and regularly review inventory data for discrepancies. Building strong communication skills and staying organized can also help interns adapt quickly and contribute effectively to the team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intern in inventory management, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Intern in Inventory Management, you need a basic understanding of supply chain principles, attention to detail, and strong organizational skills, often supported by enrollment in a relevant degree program. Familiarity with inventory management systems, Excel, and ERP software such as SAP or Oracle is typically required. Strong communication, problem-solving abilities, and a proactive attitude can set you apart in this role. These skills ensure accurate inventory tracking, efficient operations, and effective collaboration within the team.

Inventory Intern - Summer 2027
Location: Miamisburg, OH (Onsite)
About Accelevation
We build what the future runs on. Accelevation designs, manufactures and installs the physical infrastructure that powers today’s most advanced technologies. We’ve grown over 440% in the last 18 months because we take ownership, solve hard problems, and build with purpose. Join us to build the future.
Internship Overview
An internship at Accelevation is not a summer of shadowing and busy work. We design, manufacture, and install the critical infrastructure that powers some of the world's most advanced technologies. As an intern, you will work alongside industry experts on meaningful projects with real deadlines, real responsibilities, and real impact. You will collaborate with engineers, manufacturing leaders, and project managers who are solving complex challenges and shaping the future of critical infrastructure. From our manufacturing center in Southwest Ohio to the mission-critical environments behind many of the world's largest data centers, you will gain firsthand exposure to how innovative ideas become reality. More importantly, you will build lasting connections. You will join a cohort of interns who learn and grow together, while developing relationships with mentors who will support your career long after your internship ends. You will leave with more than experience. You will leave with new skills, meaningful relationships, and a deeper understanding of how your work can help build the future.
Your Impact
As an Inventory Intern, you will help improve inventory accuracy, transaction discipline, material visibility, and cycle count effectiveness across Accelevation's operations. Working closely with warehouse, production, planning, and supply chain teams, you will identify inventory variances, analyze root causes, support corrective actions, and strengthen inventory processes within Epicor. This role provides hands-on exposure to inventory control, warehouse operations, manufacturing processes, ERP systems, and operational reporting while contributing directly to business performance and customer success.
Your Day-to-Day Responsibilities
  • Create and maintain variance aging reports that track open inventory discrepancies and support timely issue resolution
  • Analyze inventory variances to identify recurring trends by part, location, transaction type, or process
  • Audit inventory transactions including receipts, transfers, material issues, adjustments, and shipments to identify sources of inventory inaccuracies
  • Perform warehouse and production floor audits to verify material locations, labeling accuracy, system data integrity, and process compliance
  • Support Epicor data cleanup initiatives by identifying and helping resolve issues involving units of measure, locations, quantities, part information, and transaction accuracy
  • Assist with corrective action activities by documenting root causes, identifying ownership, and tracking resolution progress
  • Support and help manage the cycle count program, including scheduling, variance review, reporting, and escalation of recurring issues
  • Shadow team members across receiving, warehouse, production, material issuing, and shipping functions to develop an end-to-end understanding of inventory processes
  • Identify obsolete or excess inventory and assist with validation, documentation, and approved disposition activities
  • Develop and maintain reports, dashboards, and visual tools that provide visibility to inventory-related KPIs
  • Provide ad hoc reporting and analysis to support inventory, planning, operational, and leadership decision-making
  • Support additional inventory and operational improvement projects as assigned
Qualifications
  • Currently pursuing an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Operations Management, Business, Industrial Engineering, Data Analytics, or a related field
  • Prior internship, co-op, academic project, warehouse, inventory, or manufacturing experience preferred but not required
  • Basic understanding of inventory management, warehouse operations, supply chain, manufacturing, or related business processes
  • Exposure to cycle counting, inventory control, or warehouse management principles preferred
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, reconcile, and analyze data
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel
  • Experience with ERP systems, Epicor, reporting tools, or data visualization platforms is a plus
  • Strong attention to detail and investigative mindset
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across warehouse, production, planning, and leadership teams
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage recurring tasks and reporting schedules
  • Demonstrated curiosity, accountability, problem-solving ability, and desire to learn
Benefits
  • Hands-on experience in inventory management and supply chain operations
  • Exposure to ERP systems, warehouse operations, and manufacturing processes
  • Opportunity to work on projects with measurable business impact
  • One-on-one mentorship from experienced operations and supply chain professionals
  • Executive networking and professional development opportunities
  • Collaborative, high-energy workplace
  • Potential consideration for future internship or full-time opportunities
