Job description

POSITION TITLE: Summer Student Intern, Clinical Research (mid-May-mid-Aug)

FLSA Status: Unpaid (Scholarship through Minnesota Medical Foundation)

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE:

Under the direction and supervision of the Clinical Research Manager, students will learn about and be exposed to different aspects of clinical research and clinical care within the context of a urology private practice. The Intern will assist with current clinical research studies for which they are trained and delegated as well as with administrative or operational activities as assigned.

The internship is for approximately 200 hours, e.g., about 20 hours/week for 10 weeks. The supervisor will work with an intern in developing weekly work schedules.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform essential tasks as they relate to assigned study/project/work
  • Training and tasks may include, but are not limited to:

TRAINING

  • Completing online Health Information, Privacy, and Security (HIPS) training
  • Completing online training on Good Clinical Practice (GCP) with a focus on FDA-regulated device and drug trials (Training Certificate good for 3 years)
  • Completing study-specific protocol and electronic data capture (EDC) training for the purpose of being delegated and approved to perform tasks for specific studies, including educational overviews on applicable diseases/conditions being studied
  • Completing task-specific training on Athena Electronic Medical Record/Practice

Management System

  • Completing MediaLab Courses training and required compliance training

POTENTIAL OBSERVATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

TASKS

  • Communicating with patients verbally and/or in writing about study opportunities
  • Preparing, organizing, and/or maintaining study materials or documents
  • Conducting patient chart reviews for the purpose of extracting relevant data or pre-screening patients for IRB-approved studies
  • Entering data into spreadsheets/databases and/or study-specific EDC systems
  • Uploading and entering information in a Clinical Trial Management Systems, e-Regulatory System, and/or Document Control/Learning Management System
  • Working within various computer applications/systems (e.g., Athena EMR/PM system, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, MediaLab) as needed to complete assigned work/tasks
  • Assisting with administrative tasks, e.g., preparation of study patient check requests
  • Other tasks related to specific studies or projects as assigned
  • Completion of written report or presentation for the Minnesota Urology Foundation Board regarding internship experience.


ESSENTIAL SKILLS/ABILITIES TO EFFECTIVELY PERFORM RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Represent Minnesota Urology in a professional manner, e.g., as related to appearance, communication, attitude, and the maintenance of patient confidentiality
  • Computer proficiency with experience working in Outlook, Word, and Excel with the ability to effectively incorporate the use of technology into day-to-day tasks and learn new applications as needed
  • Ability to communicate effectively, take direction, seek help and ask questions when needed
  • Flexibility
  • Consistent attendance and punctuality based on an established schedule.
  • Must be proficient in reading, writing, speaking in the English language.

QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION/TRAINING:

  • High school diploma
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited academic program, preferably within a science or health-related field with a strong interest in pursuing work or additional education in the health/medical field.
