Job description

DESCRIPTION The City of Napa's Utilities Department is seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Engineering Intern (Extra Help) to join the Utilities team. In this role, you will have the opportunity to work closely with professional engineers and assist with various field and office tasks related to civil engineering and utilities systems. Attention to Detail: Accomplishing tasks by considering all areas involved, no matter how detailed; showing concern for all aspects of the job; accurately checking processes and tasks. Continuous Learning: Actively identifying new areas for learning; regularly creating and taking advantage of learning opportunities; using newly gained knowledge and skill on the job and learning through their application.

Initiating Action: Taking prompt action to accomplish work goals; taking action to achieve results beyond what is required; being proactive. Safety Focus: Identifying and improving conditions that affect own and others' safety; upholding safety standards. Typical hours are 7:00AM to 4:30PM Monday through Friday, with every other Friday off.

Depending on operational needs, the duration of this assignment is expected to be 2-3 months, with the potential for up to 6 months. This is an Extra Help position that is not to exceed 1,000 hours in a fiscal year (07/01/2026 - 06/30/2027). Extra Help and Part-Time employees are at-will and not covered by the Civil Service System.

TYPICAL TASKS Duties may include, but are not limited to the following: Collecting GPS data in the field for water system infrastructure. Using software equipment such as desktop and tablet

Reading maps and navigating through the City while walking or driving. Following standard safety guidelines. Interacting with the public in a professional manner.

Assist with preparing plans and maps as requested. Assist with collecting, filing, updating and retrieving maps, drawings and survey reports for use by professional engineers. Verifying data pertinent to civil engineering using ArcGIS and GPS data collection.

Perform other related duties as assigned QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: Office practices and procedures, including filing and the operation of standard office equipment. Symbols and terminology used in public works, engineering and drafting; Functions, characteristics and the proper use and care of engineering, drafting equipment; Geometry, trigonometry and engineering math. Skills in: Basic engineering drafting utilizing contemporary tools and techniques; Engineering math; Geometry.

Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other persons. Ability to: Apply training and education to accomplish projects and/or enhance processes. Work independently.

Understand and follow oral and written instructions and directions. Work in noisy environments and work outdoors in all types of weather conditions. Perform manual labor associated with tasks which may include lifting and working with the full range of body movements including bending, stooping, grasping and walking on uneven ground, lift and carry up to 25 pounds; walk and stand up to 6 to 8 hours a day.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff, elected officials and the public. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Experience: None.

Education: None. Knowledge of engineering, drafting, geometry and/or trigonometry preferred. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Class "C" California Driver's License at the time of appointment.
