Job description

Improving Health Care for Every New Yorker

United Hospital Fund (UHF) is dedicated to creating an effective and equitable healthcare system for all New Yorkers. As an independent nonprofit, we analyze public policy, unite diverse stakeholders, and support innovative programs to improve health and healthcare. Our mission includes breaking down barriers in health policy and delivery to ensure equitable health opportunities. UHF’s emerging new line of Medicaid work seeks to achieve this vision by bridging and advancing quality and equity and supporting the delivery of health-related social needs (HRSN) screening and services.

About the Role:

We are seeking a technically-driven Data Analyst with expertise in SQL to architect and execute data transformations for our Medicaid initiatives. This role is not just about analyzing data—it’s about building the robust, scalable SQL infrastructure that translates complex claims and HRSN data into actionable insights. You will be responsible for turning "messy" administrative data into clean, analysis-ready datasets that drive health equity for all New Yorkers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Advanced SQL Development: Architect complex SQL queries and stored procedures to perform high-volume data cleaning, transformation, and aggregation. You will help build and maintain the department’s primary codebase, ensuring efficiency when working with millions of records.
  • Data Pipeline & ETL Optimization: Develop automated workflows to detect and address data quality issues. You will be one of the "owners" of data readiness, ensuring that Medicaid claims and other administrative data are structured for rapid analysis.
  • Technical Data Governance: Perform code reviews and implement rigorous version control (Git) and documentation standards. You will ensure the reproducibility of results through advanced programming techniques in SQL.
  • Metric Architecture: Write sophisticated SQL code to calculate quality improvement metrics, equity outcomes, and disparities across physical and behavioral health service delivery.
  • Visualization: Collaborate with stakeholders as needed to translate backend data into front-end visualizations and narratives, bridging the gap between raw data and executive decision-making.

Required Qualifications:

  • SQL Proficiency: Minimum of 2+ years of experience writing advanced SQL (e.g., complex joins, CTEs, window functions, and query optimization) within cloud-based platforms.
  • Data Scale Experience: Proven track record of managing and transforming datasets exceeding one million records.
  • Healthcare Domain Expertise: Deep understanding of health data (Medicaid claims, provider networks, or clinical data) and the specific nuances of healthcare data quality.
  • Engineering Mindset: A passion for writing clean, modular, and reusable code. You should enjoy solving "puzzle-like" data transformation challenges.
  • Reproducibility: Professional experience with Git/GitHub and creating thorough technical documentation.
  • Communication: Ability to explain technical data architecture to non-technical policy experts.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Health Informatics, or a related quantitative field.
  • R Programming: Ability to create advanced (e.g., nested, higher-order) functions in R.
  • Visualization: Proficiency in Tableau or other data visualization and dashboard tools.
  • Social Determinants Knowledge: Experience working with HRSN (Health-Related Social Needs) or Census data.
