HOPE NETWORK - Cyber Security Intern
STATUS: Temporary, Non-exempt
PAY RANGE: 14.00 - 18.00/hour Up to 20 hours per week
DEPARTMENT: Hope Network off-campus work study & Internship site
LOCATION: Hope Network, Grand Rapids
REPORTS TO: Supervisor at Hope Network
Summary
Hope Network is seeking an Information technology (IT) intern to ensure the organization's computer systems are functioning and meet the needs of the organization. This is an exciting opportunity for qualified candidates to be an integral part of an established network management team who work together to ensure system security and stability and requirements are met at Hope Network.
Key Responsibilities
  • Perform daily security monitoring tasks, including log reviews, alert triage, and verification of system health.
  • Assist senior cybersecurity staff with assigned tasks such as vulnerability scans, access reviews, and incident documentation.
  • Conduct routine audits of user accounts, permissions, and system configurations to ensure compliance with internal policies and healthcare regulations (e.g., HIPAA).
  • Help maintain security tools and systems by applying updates, checking status dashboards, and reporting issues.
  • Document findings, prepare summaries, and support ongoing security projects under the guidance of senior team members.
  • Follow established procedures and escalate concerns or anomalies promptly.
  • Provide GREAT customer service, anticipating and exceeding the needs of our customers.
  • Demonstrate and promote the University Cultural Values.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours as an undergraduate student or 3 credit hours as a graduate student at Davenport University while meeting the standards of academic progress.
  • Federal Workstudy Eligible.
  • Basic understanding of cybersecurity concepts such as threats, vulnerabilities, and access control.
  • Familiarity with Windows systems, VMware and common IT tools.
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to follow structured processes.
  • Interest in healthcare privacy and regulatory requirements.
Technical Skills & Knowledge
  • Knowledge of operating systems: Competency in administering Windows and / or Linux operating systems.
  • Familiarity with hardware: Working physical devices-such as servers or printers.
  • Cloud computing skills: Familiarity with cloud applications like Office365, Google Cloud Platform, and/or AWS.
  • Knowledge of networks: Set up and maintain Local Area Networks (LAN) and Wide Area Networks (WAN), in addition to setting up network security features like firewalls.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills: In addition to working on a team, sysadmin will be expected to help other employees that don't have the same technical knowledge, through help desk support or other means.
