To excel as an Intern Core Network Engineer, you typically need a foundational understanding of networking concepts, protocols, and a relevant degree or coursework in computer science or telecommunications. Familiarity with network simulation tools, basic configuration of routers and switches, and exposure to platforms like Cisco or Juniper are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork help interns quickly learn and adapt in dynamic technical environments. These skills and qualifications are crucial for supporting network operations and contributing to the reliability and efficiency of core network infrastructure.

What types of projects or tasks can an Intern Core Network Engineer expect to work on during their internship?

As an Intern Core Network Engineer, you can expect to assist with tasks such as monitoring network performance, troubleshooting connectivity issues, and supporting routine maintenance of core network infrastructure. Interns often help configure network devices, document network layouts, and participate in testing new technologies under the supervision of senior engineers. You'll likely collaborate closely with other network engineers, IT support teams, and sometimes vendors to ensure the network runs smoothly, giving you valuable hands-on experience in a real-world telecom or enterprise environment.

What does an Intern Core Network Engineer do?

An Intern Core Network Engineer assists in maintaining, configuring, and troubleshooting the backbone of a company's telecommunications or data network. They support senior engineers in tasks like monitoring network performance, implementing upgrades, and resolving connectivity issues. This role often involves learning about network protocols, hardware, and security measures, as well as documenting network changes. Interns gain hands-on experience with real-world network infrastructure and develop foundational skills for a career in network engineering.

Hands-on operational experience with Nokia Packet Core (UPF, SMF, AMF, PCF), strong understanding of Packet Core call flows, degradation/failure scenarios, alarm patterns, KPIs, and L3/L4 support or NOC experience.
Company Overview
Our client is a leading multinational telecommunications technology company seeking a skilled Core Network Engineer to provide operational expertise in Nokia Packet Core networks. This is a time-sensitive project requiring on-site presence in Plano, TX.
Role Summary
The Core Network Engineer will act as a subject matter expert (SME) for Packet Core operations, ensuring that analytics and root cause analysis (RCA) results are accurate, credible, and actionable from a Core Network Operations (NOC) perspective. This is a domain validation and governance role, not a development role, supporting a pilot project with a strong focus on operational integrity.
Key Responsibilities
  • Provide SME guidance on Nokia Packet Core network functions (UPF, SMF, AMF, PCF).
  • Validate alarm correlations and RCA signatures against actual operational behavior.
  • Define and assess success criteria from a Core Ops/NOC perspective.
  • Identify incorrect correlations, false positives, and missing scenarios.
  • Support interpretation of analytics outputs for operations and engineering teams.
  • Contribute to pilot findings, recommendations, and next-step decisions.
Required Technical Skills
  • Hands-on operational experience with Nokia Packet Core (UPF, SMF, AMF, PCF).
  • Strong understanding of Packet Core call flows and common degradation/failure scenarios.
  • Knowledge of alarm patterns and KPIs.
  • Experience in L3/L4 support, NOC, or ATAC-type environments.
Preferred Experience
  • Exposure to national-scale Core Network environments.
  • Familiarity with adjacent Core functions: USD, UDM, PCF, Charging, IMS Voice Core.
  • Experience participating in RCA, incident reviews, or post-mortems.
