Position Summary
Robert Campbell & Associates is seeking an experienced Survey Crew Chief to lead field survey crews throughout East Tennessee. This position is responsible for planning and executing a variety of land surveying projects while ensuring accuracy, safety, efficiency, and exceptional client service. The Survey Crew Chief works closely with licensed surveyors, project managers, engineers, and office staff to deliver high-quality survey data for transportation, land development, utility, municipal, and commercial projects. Typical responsibilities align with industry standards for leading boundary, topographic, construction, and as-built surveys while supervising field crews and maintaining quality control.
Essential Responsibilities
  • Lead and supervise a field survey crew on daily assignments.
  • Perform boundary, topographic, ALTA/NSPS, construction staking, as-built, utility, and control surveys.
  • Operate and maintain survey equipment including:
    • Robotic Total Stations
    • GNSS/GPS (RTK) systems
    • Digital levels
    • Data collectors
    • LIDAR/Drone
  • Read and interpret:
    • Construction plans
    • Plats
    • Deeds
    • Legal descriptions
    • Engineering drawings
  • Establish survey control and accurately collect field measurements.
  • Maintain detailed electronic field notes and documentation.
  • Download, review, and organize field data for office processing.
  • Verify accuracy and completeness of collected survey information.
  • Coordinate daily work activities with Project Managers and Licensed Surveyors.
  • Communicate professionally with clients, contractors, utility representatives, and property owners.
  • Identify and resolve field issues while maintaining project schedules.
  • Ensure all work complies with company quality standards and Tennessee surveying requirements.
  • Train and mentor Survey Instrument Operators and Survey Technicians.
  • Perform routine maintenance and calibration of survey equipment and company vehicles.
  • Follow all company safety policies and OSHA requirements.

Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Associate degree in Surveying, Geomatics, Civil Engineering Technology, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible land surveying experience.
  • Minimum 2 years leading a survey field crew preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • Boundary surveying
    • Topographic surveying
    • Construction layout
    • Survey control
    • As-built surveys
  • Experience operating robotic total stations, GPS/GNSS equipment, and electronic data collectors.
  • LIDAR/Drone experience is desired.
  • Ability to read construction plans, plats, legal descriptions, and engineering drawings.
  • Strong mathematical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and leadership abilities.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to travel throughout East Tennessee as project needs require.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Tennessee Surveyor Intern (SI) certification or ability to obtain.
  • Experience with Trimble, Leica, or Carlson survey equipment.
  • Experience using survey software including Trimble Business Center, Carlson, Civil 3D, or MicroStation.
  • Experience working on TDOT, municipal, utility, or transportation projects.
  • FAA Part 107 Drone License is a plus.

Physical Requirements
This position requires regular outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
Employees must be able to:
  • Walk long distances over uneven terrain.
  • Stand for extended periods.
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Bend, kneel, climb, and work around active construction sites.
  • Work in heat, cold, rain, and other environmental conditions.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
