Position Summary:
The Peabody Preparatory is pleased to announce an adjunct Music Creation teaching position in the Music Creation Department at the Peabody Preparatory, a division of the Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD commencing September 2026.
The successful candidate will have experience teaching musicianship - encompassing both music theory and ear training - to students of all ages and levels (beginner to advanced) in both individual and group settings. Opportunities for teaching are currently available at the Peabody Preparatory's Baltimore (Downtown) campus, as well as online.
The successful candidate will join a highly skilled and dedicated faculty as part of a vibrant and growing department committed to helping all students - those who perform music, as well as those who create it - become more knowledgeable and versatile musicians. We embrace the novice musician as well as the serious student aspiring to a career in music. Ideal candidates should be experienced in teaching musicianship to students of all ages and levels and comfortable with both in-person and online modalities.
Duties:

- Teach musicianship courses for beginner and intermediate students of all ages, both in person and online.
In conjunction with the Chair:

- Develop a placement test to determine the appropriate level for interested students.
- Consult with instrumental/vocal department chairs to ensure a curriculum that meets the needs of their students, particularly those seeking to fulfill certificate requirements.
- Consult with previous musicianship faculty to gain a better understanding of the program's history and development.

Gilman believed that teaching and research go hand in hand—that success in one depends on success in the other—and that a modern university must do both well. He also believed that sharing our knowledge and discoveries would help make the world a better place. In 145 years, we haven’t strayed from that vision. This is still a destination for excellent, ambitious scholars and a world leader in teaching and research. Distinguished professors mentor students in the arts and music, humanities, social and natural sciences, engineering, international studies, education, business, and the health professions. Those same faculty members, along with their colleagues at the university’s Applied Physics Laboratory, have made us the nation’s leader in federal research and development funding every year since 1979. That’s a fitting distinction for America’s first research university, a place that has revolutionized higher education in the U.S. and continues to bring knowledge and discoveries to the world.
