What Is the Opportunity?
Travelers is seeking a Software Engineer I to join our organization as we grow and transform our Technology landscape through AI-driven engineering practices. The individual will complete intermediate end to end engineering tasks for specific system assignments including developing, analyzing, configuring, testing, debugging, troubleshooting, documenting, health monitoring/alerting, and implementing based on user or system design specifications, as well as participating in troubleshooting, conducting impact analysis and escalating appropriately. In this role, the individual contributor is expected to make AI-driven tools and workflows a core part of how they engineer - not as an occasional aid, but as a fundamental shift in how software is designed, built, and delivered. This role operates within an AI-driven team where the standard expectation is that AI capabilities are actively and continuously applied to improve engineering outcomes at every stage of the software development lifecycle. Applicants must be authorized to work for ANY employer in the U.S. The company does not sponsor/support H-1B petitions, TN, or Forms I-983/STEM OPT, for this role. What Will You Do?
  • Perform analysis, design, development, and configuration functions as well as define technical requirements for assignments of intermediate complexity - with AI-driven tools as a primary means of accelerating delivery, improving code quality, and reducing manual effort across the engineering lifecycle.
  • Participate with team to perform analysis, assessment and resolution for defects and incidents of intermediate complexity and escalate appropriately, routinely applying AI-driven tooling to accelerate root cause identification, pattern recognition, and resolution quality.
  • Work within guidelines set by team to independently tackle well-scoped problems, defaulting to AI-driven approaches as a first line of problem solving and contributing observations about what works back to the team.
  • Seek opportunities to expand technical knowledge and capabilities, with a strong emphasis on deepening fluency in AI tools, prompt engineering, and the evolving landscape of AI-driven software development practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?
  • Three years of programming/development experience.
  • Hands-on experience using AI-driven or AI-assisted tools in a professional engineering context strongly preferred.
  • Delivery - Strong delivery skills including the ability to deliver work at a steady, predictable pace to achieve commitments, decompose work assignments into small batch releases and contribute to tradeoff and negotiation discussions. Consistently applies AI-driven tools to compress delivery timelines, reduce rework, and improve the predictability and quality of personal output.
  • Domain Expertise - Demonstrated track record of domain expertise including the ability to understand technical concepts necessary to do the job effectively, demonstrate willingness, cooperation, and concern for business issues and possess in-depth knowledge of immediate systems worked on. Actively applies AI-driven techniques within their domain to deepen system understanding, surface hidden dependencies, and accelerate onboarding to new areas of the codebase.
  • Problem Solving - Proven problem solving skills including debugging skills, allowing you to determine source of issues in unfamiliar code or systems and the ability to recognize and solve repetitive problems rather than working around them, recognize mistakes using them as learning opportunities and break down large problems into smaller, more manageable ones. Treats AI-driven tooling as a core problem-solving instrument - using it to generate hypotheses, automate repetitive diagnosis, and rapidly prototype solutions while applying critical judgment to evaluate and refine AI-generated output.
  • Communication - Strong communication skills with the ability to clearly and concisely interact with team members, document work in a clear, easy to follow manner, collaborate well with team members, take in well-scoped requirements and ask the right questions to ensure clarification, seek out and receive constructive criticism well and listen when others are speaking. Communicates AI tool usage transparently as a standard part of engineering practice, contributes to team knowledge sharing on effective AI-driven techniques, and documents AI-assisted decisions clearly for future reference.
  • Leadership - Intermediate leadership skills with a proven track record of self-motivation in identifying personal growth opportunities. Demonstrates initiative in building and sharing AI-driven engineering fluency, treating the adoption of new AI capabilities as a professional responsibility and a direct contribution to the team's collective velocity and capability.
What is a Must Have?
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, related STEM field, or its equivalent in education and/or work experience.
  • 2 additional years of software engineering experience.
What Is in It for You?

  • Paid Time Off:Start your career at Travelers with a minimum of 20 days Paid Time Off annually, plus nine paid company Holidays.
  • Wellness Program:The Travelers wellness program is comprised of tools, discounts and resources that empower you to achieve your wellness goals and caregiving needs.
