What is an intermediate full stack developer?

An Intermediate Full Stack Developer is a software professional with a few years of experience who is proficient in both front-end and back-end web development. They are capable of working on the user interface, server-side logic, databases, and APIs, often collaborating with other team members to build and maintain web applications. Intermediate developers have moved beyond entry-level tasks, can work independently on moderately complex projects, and are familiar with industry-standard tools and frameworks. Their role often includes troubleshooting, optimizing code, and contributing to architecture decisions while still learning and expanding their skill set.

What are some common challenges faced by intermediate full stack developers when balancing front-end and back-end responsibilities?

Intermediate Full Stack Developers often encounter the challenge of effectively managing tasks across both front-end and back-end domains, which requires staying updated with rapidly evolving technologies on both sides. Coordinating the integration of user interfaces with server logic, ensuring seamless communication between components, and maintaining code quality across the stack can be demanding. Additionally, they frequently collaborate with UI/UX designers, DevOps engineers, and QA teams, making strong communication and time management skills essential. Addressing these challenges provides valuable experience and prepares developers for more advanced roles in the future.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intermediate full stack developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Intermediate Full Stack Developer, you need solid proficiency in front-end and back-end programming languages (such as JavaScript, HTML/CSS, and a backend language like Node.js, Python, or Java), along with experience in database management and version control systems. Familiarity with frameworks (e.g., React, Angular, Express), cloud services, and tools like Git is typically required, and certifications in relevant technologies can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and teamwork distinguish high-performing developers in this role. These combined technical and interpersonal skills are crucial for efficiently building, deploying, and maintaining robust, user-friendly web applications in collaborative environments.

What is the difference between Intermediate Full Stack Developer vs Front End Developer?

Job description

We're building something new inside our AI Studio, and we're looking for a Full Stack Engineer to help build it with us. This role sits at the center of a new platform that is being actively designed and shipped. The architecture is still taking shape, and the integration surface is constantly expanding. What excites us is the opportunity to build the infrastructure that makes never-before-imagined character experiences possible.

We work where storytelling, imagination, and technology converge. Our focus is on building the core platform: the APIs, the admin tooling, the service integrations, and the delivery infrastructure that makes AI-powered character interactions real. This work connects what brand and creative teams envision with what audiences ultimately experience.

This role is foundational to everything the platform does. Working closely with the Engineering Manager and Principal AI Engineer, this Full Stack Engineer will own significant portions of the system end to end - from the tooling that configures and versions character behavior to the API layer that external partners and products consume. Success here means shipping features that hold up under real-world conditions and integrating reliably with the AI services that bring characters to life.

What You'll Do

  • Design and build features for our AI character platform. This includes: the admin tooling, as well as the API layer consumed by external integrations and partners.
  • Develop, maintain, and evolve the REST APIs that power character experiences across interaction modalities, with attention to versioning, access control, and reliability.
  • Integrate with third-party AI and media services, including LLM providers, voice services (STT/TTS), and real-time delivery infrastructure.
  • Contribute to AWS infrastructure, deployment pipelines, and environment management as the platform grows and new capabilities are introduced.
  • Partner closely with the Engineering Manager and Principal AI Engineer on architectural decisions, code review, and technical planning.
  • Participate in observability, on-call practices, and operational improvements to ensure the platform remains reliable as usage scales.

What You Will Bring

  • 3+ years of full stack engineering experience with a strong backend emphasis.
  • Proficiency with modern frontend frameworks (React or equivalent) and backend technologies (Node.js and/or Python).
  • Experience building, versioning, and maintaining production REST APIs consumed by external teams or partners.
  • Solid AWS fundamentals - Lambda, API Gateway, RDS, S3, and related services.
  • A track record of integrating with third-party APIs in production environments, including managing reliability, error handling, and graceful degradation.
  • Strong communication skills and comfort working in a small, fast-moving team across multiple concurrent workstreams.

Extra Credit

  • Experience integrating with LLM APIs (OpenAI, Gemini, Anthropic, or equivalent).
  • Familiarity with real-time communication systems (WebRTC, WebSockets, or LiveKit).
  • Experience with voice and audio API integrations (TTS/STT).
  • Background in platform, developer-tooling, or API-first product development.
  • Observability experience with Datadog or equivalent tooling.
