Intermediate Frontend Developer information

What is an intermediate frontend developer?

Intermediate Frontend Developers are professionals who build and maintain the user-facing parts of web applications, typically possessing a few years of experience beyond entry-level roles. They are proficient in core technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and often work with frameworks such as React, Angular, or Vue.js. These developers are responsible for translating design mockups into interactive interfaces, optimizing application performance, and ensuring cross-browser compatibility. At the intermediate level, they are expected to contribute to code reviews, collaborate with backend developers, and solve more complex technical challenges compared to junior developers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intermediate frontend developer?

To thrive as an Intermediate Frontend Developer, you need solid proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern frameworks such as React or Vue, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, build tools (Webpack, npm), and understanding of responsive design are essential technical requirements. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with teams and deliver high-quality user interfaces. These skills ensure that you can create efficient, maintainable, and user-friendly web applications that meet both user needs and business objectives.

What are the typical challenges an intermediate frontend developer faces when collaborating with backend teams?

Intermediate Frontend Developers often encounter challenges related to integrating frontend interfaces with backend APIs, such as handling inconsistent data structures or unclear API documentation. Clear and proactive communication with backend teams is essential to resolve these issues efficiently. Additionally, they may need to negotiate timelines or prioritize tasks to ensure smooth development cycles, all while maintaining high code quality and user experience standards.

What is the difference between Intermediate Frontend Developer vs Junior Frontend Developer?

AspectIntermediate Frontend DeveloperJunior Frontend Developer
Experience2-4 years of experience0-1 year of experience
SkillsProficient in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, frameworks like React or Angular, and basic version controlBasic understanding of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and some frameworks
ResponsibilitiesDeveloping features, debugging, collaborating on projects, code reviewsAssisting in development, learning codebases, fixing minor bugs
Work EnvironmentIndependent task handling, team collaboration, project ownershipSupervised tasks, learning from senior developers, support roles

The main difference between an Intermediate Frontend Developer and a Junior Frontend Developer lies in experience, skill level, and responsibilities. Intermediate developers handle more complex tasks independently and contribute significantly to projects, while juniors focus on learning and supporting senior team members.

Job description

Tangram Flex is seeking a Software Engineer with Language Development Experience to help design, develop, and optimize core interpreter/transpiler infrastructure and language toolchains. In this role, you will work at the intersection of programming language design, hardware architecture, and systems engineering by translating high-level abstractions into high-performance, production-ready machine code. Whether you are optimizing intermediate representations (IR), building custom front-ends/back-ends, or tuning domain-specific code generators (e.g., native compilers, DSLs, or transpilers).

Candidates should possess a solid technical skillset coupled with the drive to pursue deep understanding and the capability to work independently with minimal supervision. You will collaborate closely with software engineers, systems engineers, and defense stakeholders throughout the entire program lifecycle to turn design intent into executable, verified software reality.

What We Do: Our team and products provide solutions to enable innovators to design, develop, verify, and advance critical systems, while accelerating innovation that advances our nation's security. By accelerating delivery of critical systems, Tangram is transforming the way our nation solves complex software challenges.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES/

  • Software Development & Implementation: Read, and write high-quality, efficient code in relevant languages, such as C, C++, Rust, and/or Python
  • Interpreter & Transpiler Development: Design, implement, and maintain interpreter components (front-end parsers, type checkers, optimization passes, and back-end code generators).
  • Performance Tuning: Analyze generated assembly or IR, profile code execution, and implement IR-level and target-specific optimizations (vectorization, instruction scheduling, register allocation, auto-parallelization).
  • Toolchain & Runtime Infrastructure: Support build systems, linkers, debuggers, static analysis tools, runtime systems, and garbage collectors/allocators.
  • Architecture Support: Collaborate with hardware/systems engineering teams to define, target, and optimize for new Instruction Set Architectures (ISAs) or specialized hardware accelerators (GPUs, NPUs, TPUs, FPGAs).
  • Language Design & Semantics: Contribute to the specification and implementation of domain-specific language (DSL) features or language extensions.
  • Code Quality & Testing: Write comprehensive unit, regression, and benchmark test suites to ensure interpreter correctness, stability, and performance trackability.
  • Collaboration & Communication: Partner cross-functionally with systems engineers and product teams to translate model characteristics and system requirements into test plans, and articulate technical findings clearly to both business and technical users.

DESIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE/

Required Skills:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or an equivalent technical field.
  • Minimum of 3+ years of working on compilers, interpreters, or transpilers for parallel architectures.
  • Ability to obtain or possess a current/or recent U.S. Government Security (DoW) Clearance. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain clearance.
  • Programming languages: Systems programming language experience, such as C, C++, Rust, etc. Includes raw memory management, performance optimization, and modern best practices.
  • Interpreter Fundamentals: Deep understanding of modern interpreter and/or transpiler architecture (lexing/parsing, ASTs, intermediate representations, control/data-flow analysis, and optimization passes).
  • Target Architectures: Solid understanding of computer architectures (x86, ARM, RISC-V) and assembly language.
  • Proven experience creating or extending language grammars.
  • Travel required occasionally for customer support and presentations
  • Work is performed in Dayton, Ohio

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with production compiler frameworks (e.g., LLVM, GCC, MLIR, Cranelift, or NVVM).
  • Experience with FPGA configuration & programming logic.
  • Experience with program analysis, static & dynamic code analyzers, and/or formal verification.
  • Active contributions to an open-source compiler, interpreter, transpiler, or other language infrastructure projects.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to travel by air, car, or other transportation methods
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer (up to 8 hours/day)
  • Ability to lift and carry lightweight items (e.g., laptops, demo equipment, marketing materials) up to 25 lbs.
  • Frequent use of hands and fingers for typing, using a mouse, writing, and handling equipment.
  • Visual acuity to read detailed technical documents, view computer screens, and operate software systems
  • Auditory ability to participate in meetings, customer demos, and conference calls, including in potentially noisy environments (e.g., trade shows or military facilities)
  • Mobility to move between office spaces, customer sites, conference venues, and manufacturing or lab environments
  • Flexibility to adapt to varying work environments (e.g., corporate offices, government buildings, industrial or lab spaces)

We are committed to staying rooted in our core value of Team First. For that reason, we've designed a highly competitive benefits program and supportive work environment to engage employees and their families.

  • Hybrid work options
  • Flexible Working Hours, 10 paid holidays, and generous Paid Time Off
  • Employer Paid Medical, Dental, Vision and Short and Long Term Disability Insurance
  • Access to group rating plans for Life Insurance
  • Employer contribution to Health Savings Account
  • Competitive 401K employer match
  • A vibrant engineering culture that fosters transparency, collaboration, and continuous professional growth via internal tech community events (Lightning Talks, Integration Events).
