What is intermediate accounting?

Intermediate accounting jobs refer to positions that require a solid understanding of accounting principles beyond the basics but do not yet demand advanced, specialized expertise. These roles typically involve tasks such as preparing financial statements, managing general ledger entries, reconciling accounts, and assisting with audits. Professionals in these positions often work under the supervision of senior accountants or managers and may be progressing toward more advanced roles. Intermediate accounting jobs are common in a variety of industries and are a crucial step for those seeking to advance in the accounting field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intermediate accountant?

To excel as an Intermediate Accountant, you need a solid understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting, and analytical skills, typically supported by a bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance. Familiarity with accounting software such as QuickBooks, SAP, or Oracle, and often working toward a CPA certification, is common. Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and effective communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure accurate financial management, compliance, and the ability to support business decision-making.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in intermediate accounting roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in intermediate accounting roles often encounter challenges such as managing complex reconciliations, adapting to evolving accounting standards, and meeting tight financial reporting deadlines. Successfully addressing these challenges requires strong organizational skills, continuous learning to stay updated on regulations, and effective communication with colleagues in finance and other departments. Leveraging accounting software and seeking mentorship from senior accountants can also help navigate day-to-day complexities and support professional growth.

Job description

Why Keiter?
At Keiter, we help people achieve their full potential while pursuing their purpose - at home, at work, and in the community. We offer:
  • A flexible, supportive work environment that empowers your professional and personal success
  • A firm that is committed to our clients and staff
  • An inclusive, team-oriented culture
  • Experience across both Tax and Audit departments
  • Opportunities to network with team members outside the office
  • Comprehensive training and orientation to our systems and firm

As Opportunity Advisors®, our mission goes beyond compliance. We help clients uncover new opportunities through deep relationships, proactive insights, and thoughtful tax strategies tailored to their evolving needs.
What You'll Do:
Audit Responsibilities:
  • Assist on audit engagements across multiple industries, including for-profit, nonprofit, and ERISA/benefit plan clients
  • Perform audit testing procedures, such as:

    • Participant data testing and contribution testing (ERISA/401(k))
    • Cash testing, payroll testing, investment testing, and analytical procedures
    • Substantive testing, rollforwards, and compliance testing

  • Help prepare and update audit documentation and workpapers, often referencing prior-year files
  • Gain exposure to on-site audit work, including interacting with client personnel and observing audit procedures in real time
  • Use audit software and tools such as CaseWare, XCM, ShareFile, client portals, and Excel
  • Learn how audit teams plan, execute, and review engagements from start to finish

Tax Responsibilities:
  • Prepare and assist with individual and business tax returns, including:

    • Forms 1040, 1065, 1120, 1120S, 1041, and gift tax returns

  • Work on GSC (grouped) returns, gaining repetition and confidence across similar but non-identical clients
  • Input and reconcile K-1s, trial balances, fixed assets, and adjusting journal entries
  • Assist with book-to-tax reconciliations, diagnostics, and clearing review points
  • Support first-year and new-client returns, learning how information flows when no prior-year data exists
  • Use tax software such as CCH Axcess, SurePrep, Fixed Assets, and related tools
  • Conduct basic tax research and assist with internal or external tax blog content on current tax topics

What You'll Bring:
  • Completion of at least one semester of an intermediate-level accounting class
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and other computer skills
  • Interest in pursuing a career in public accounting and sitting for the CPA exam

Pay:
  • The anticipated hiring range for this position is $30.00-$32.50 and is dependent on relevant experience, qualifications, and skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in accounting or accounting systems
  • Have completed at least one semester of intermediate accounting
  • Detail-oriented, enthusiastic, and collaborative mindset
  • Growth-oriented, entrepreneurial spirit with a desire to make an impact

Core Skills You'll Build:
  • Apply classroom accounting concepts to real client work
  • Develop strong Excel skills, including data cleanup, analysis, and review
  • Learn how to self-review work, respond to review notes, and improve accuracy
  • Communicate professionally with associates, seniors, managers, and partners
  • Manage time across multiple engagements and deadlines
  • Gain confidence asking questions, seeking feedback, and taking initiative to find work

Training & Support:
  • Participate in formal training weeks before each rotation (Audit and Tax)

  • Work closely with a Performance Coach and a Buddy
  • Receive real-time feedback, review notes, and direct verbal feedback throughout the internship
  • Learn how to navigate firm systems, workflows, and professional expectations

Internship Overview:
  • Schedule: Monday - Thursdays, with Fridays off
  • Format: In-person, hybrid, and virtual options available. In-person experience is strongly encouraged
  • Returning Interns: May specialize in either Tax or Audit based on prior experience
  • Exposure to real client work, not just shadowing
  • Opportunity to rotate between Audit and Tax
  • Hands-on experience using the same tools and processes as full-time staff
  • Participate in firm events, networking opportunities, and intern group activities
  • A realistic preview of what a full-time career at Keiter looks like

If this piques your interest, we invite you to apply and connect with us at your next campus recruiting event. Join Keiter and discover how your skills and ambition can help clients build wealth, preserve legacy, and pursue purpose.
