What is interior design?

Interior design is the art and science of enhancing the interiors of a space to create a more aesthetically pleasing and functional environment. Interior designers work with clients to plan layouts, select color schemes, furniture, lighting, and decorative items. They consider factors such as space planning, safety, and building codes. The goal is to optimize the use of space while reflecting the client's tastes and needs. Interior designers work in residential, commercial, and hospitality settings.

How to get a job in interior design?

The first step in getting a job in interior design is a formal education. You should earn a bachelor’s degree in interior design to gain the skills needed to launch your career. After your education, you should seek out an apprenticeship with an experienced designer. This gives you an opportunity to apply your education to real-world design scenarios. While looking for an internship, you can start doing designs for your own home or even offer to do this for family and friends. This allows you to build a portfolio that you can use to get a job. Any design project you can complete is a major plus to your career opportunities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an interior designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Interior Designer, you need a solid background in design principles, spatial planning, and a relevant degree such as a BFA or BA in Interior Design. Proficiency in design software like AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite, as well as certifications like NCIDQ, are highly valued. Creativity, strong communication, and project management skills help you interpret client visions and collaborate with contractors. These abilities ensure you can deliver functional, aesthetically pleasing spaces that meet client needs and industry standards.

What are some common challenges interior designers face when working on client projects?

Interior designers often encounter challenges such as balancing client preferences with functional and structural limitations, managing budgets, and coordinating with contractors or vendors to ensure timely project completion. Effective communication is key, as designers must interpret client visions while navigating logistical constraints and unexpected issues during implementation. Adapting to changes and problem-solving on the spot are essential skills for success in this dynamic role.

Firm Description
Integrus Architecture is a Pacific Northwest design practice offering architectural, structural engineering, experiential design, and interior design with offices in Spokane, Seattle, and Portland. With nearly 75 years' experience, we are passionate about shaping the relational spaces that bring society together through public works architecture.

At Integrus we create environments that support the best of human aspiration, potential, and goodwill. We focus our efforts around our three pillars: Supporting Architectures of Care and Belonging, Shaping Spaces of Community and Resilience, and Sustaining Environments through Stewardship and Innovation.

Known for our collaborative approach and community focus, we take great care in working closely with clients, stakeholders, consultants, and each other to ensure that each project meets the unique needs and aspirations of the people it serves.

Position Summary
We are seeking a Technical Architect who is passionate about creating meaningful, high-impact places that strengthen communities. In this role, you will lead the technical development of complex, mid- to large-scale projects, serving as a key contributor to the design excellence that defines Integrus. You will play an important role in advancing our culture of quality, innovation, and collaboration while helping to deliver exceptional outcomes for our clients and communities.

Working closely with multidisciplinary teams, you will translate complex design concepts into thoughtful, high-performing solutions that balance design intent, technical rigor, and project goals. Drawing on deep expertise in building systems, technical design, code compliance, and project delivery methods, you will guide and mentor project teams throughout all phases of design and construction, with primary involvement from design development through construction administration.

As a trusted advisor and technical leader, you will elevate technical knowledge across the firm, champion quality and continuous improvement, and help establish the standards and best practices that support exceptional project delivery. You will be instrumental in fostering a culture of learning, mentoring emerging professionals, and advancing our collective technical expertise.

If you are passionate about mentoring others, solving complex technical challenges, and making a lasting impact on the built environment, this is an opportunity to help shape the future of our practice at Integrus.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the technical development of complex projects through design, documentation, and construction, ensuring alignment with project goals, design intent, and firm standards.
  • Understand the difference in documentation and construction administration approach relative to Design-Build, GC/CM, and Design-Bid-Build delivery methods.
  • Serve as a technical authority on building systems, constructability, code compliance, detailing, and construction documentation.
  • Champion technical excellence and quality by leading QA/QC reviews and promoting consistency, accuracy, and best practices across project teams.
  • Guide project teams through technical decision-making, balancing performance, cost, schedule, sustainability, and long-term building success.
  • Provide expertise in codes and regulatory requirements, including life safety, accessibility, permitting, and approval strategies to reduce risk and support successful project outcomes.
  • Evaluate and recommend building systems, materials, and assemblies that support design objectives, constructability, durability, and value.
  • Collaborate with project leadership, designers, consultants, and contractors to proactively identify, coordinate, and resolve technical challenges.
  • Support construction administration efforts, including RFIs, submittals, field observations, and technical problem-solving during construction.
  • Stay current on emerging technologies, codes, products, and industry trends, sharing knowledge and advancing technical innovation across the firm.
  • Mentor and develop architects and design professionals, fostering technical growth, elevating documentation standards, and strengthening project delivery practices.
  • Advance firmwide technical standards and continuous improvement initiatives that enhance quality, efficiency, and project performance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Architecture from an accredited program.
  • Current architectural licensure (required).
  • Minimum of 15+ years of professional architectural experience, with significant expertise in technical design, detailing, construction documentation, and project delivery.
  • Extensive knowledge of building codes, accessibility (ADA), life safety, building systems, and construction standards.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and coordinating complex building projects through all phases of design and construction.
  • Advanced proficiency in Revit and a strong commitment to BIM-integrated project delivery.
  • Strong understanding of interdisciplinary coordination, constructability, and quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) processes.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills with the ability to translate complex technical concepts into practical solutions.
  • Ability to mentor and guide project teams while fostering technical excellence across the firm.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with public sector projects, such as PreK-12 Education, Higher Education, Government Projects or other Civic facilities.
  • Experience leading technical reviews, QA/QC initiatives, or developing firmwide technical standards.
  • Knowledge of sustainable building systems and green building certifications (e.g., LEED, WELL, Living Building Challenge).
  • Proficiency with Bluebeam, Revit, and other Sustainability Software.
  • Experience mentoring architects and design professionals or serving in a firm-wide technical leadership role.
