Interior Design Engineers work closely with architects, construction teams, and clients to ensure that design concepts are not only aesthetically pleasing but also structurally feasible and compliant with safety standards. They frequently participate in project meetings, review technical drawings, and provide input on materials and installation methods. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as they must coordinate design intent with practical implementation while adhering to timelines and budgets.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Interior Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Interior Design Engineer, you need a solid background in interior design principles, spatial planning, and engineering concepts, usually backed by a degree in interior design, architecture, or engineering. Proficiency with design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and 3D visualization tools, along with knowledge of building codes and materials, is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong interpersonal skills help professionals collaborate effectively with clients and multidisciplinary teams. These skills ensure that functional, aesthetically pleasing, and structurally sound interior environments are delivered to meet client needs and regulatory standards.

What is the 3 5 7 rule in interior design?

The 3-5-7 rule in interior design is a guideline for arranging furniture and decor to create balanced and harmonious spaces, typically involving grouping items in odd numbers like three, five, or seven for visual interest. Interior designers often use this rule to achieve aesthetic appeal and proper scale in a room. It helps in creating focal points and maintaining proportion in design layouts.

What does an interior design engineer do?

An interior design engineer combines principles of engineering and interior design to develop functional, safe, and aesthetically pleasing interior spaces. They often work with CAD software, coordinate with architects and contractors, and ensure compliance with building codes and safety standards throughout the design process.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior engineers in fields such as petroleum, aerospace, and software engineering can earn $500,000 or more annually, often through a combination of base salary, bonuses, and stock options. These roles typically require advanced skills, extensive experience, and often involve leadership or specialized technical expertise.

How much does an interior engineer make?

Interior Design Engineers typically earn a median annual salary of around $60,000 to $80,000, depending on experience, location, and project complexity. Salaries can increase with specialized skills, certifications, and working in high-demand markets or large firms.

Job description

Join the 2025 AIA Firm Award Winner shaping a more sustainable future.
LPA is a collective of designers, engineers, and researchers committed to tackling the biggest issues of our time. Our "No Excuses" integrated design approach was recognized by the AIA as "a trailblazer in sustainable, high-performance architecture". At LPA you'll be part of the team that is changing the way the industry thinks about design and carbon emissions, built around the belief that we only achieve our goals when everybody has a seat at the table and all input is valued.
We're currently seeking an Interior Design Coordinator to join our dynamic Austin studio. You'll be part of a culture that values deep collaboration, technical excellence, and continual growth. Examples of projects we've completed in Austin include Casis Elementary School and General Marshall Middle School. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across our studios in California and Texas-and help bring high-performance, community-first design to life.
What You'll Do:
  • Collaborate with architects, engineers, interior designers, and other disciplines as part of LPA's integrated design process.
  • Contribute to projects throughout their full lifecycle, from conceptual design through construction administration.
  • Partner with Project Managers and Project Designers to execute interior architecture and design assignments.
  • Prepare and coordinate design development and construction documentation, ensuring quality, accuracy, and adherence to project standards.
  • Lead and oversee the production of project documentation completed by junior designers.
  • Review, coordinate, and process construction administration documentation, including RFIs, submittals, and other project correspondence.
  • Research and evaluate building products, materials, and construction methods to support design and technical solutions.
  • Mentor and provide day-to-day guidance to junior designers while receiving mentorship and professional development from Project Leaders and Managing Directors.

What We Offer:
At LPA, your growth and contributions matter. We foster a collaborative culture where creative ideas are valued, and voices are heard.
  • Mentorship from Managing Directors, Design Directors, and senior team members across disciplines.
  • Career development support, including licensure incentives, professional development grants, and in-house training.
  • Ongoing education through LPA+U courses and Tech Talks focused on innovative, sustainable practices.
  • 8 paid hours of volunteer time each year.
  • Opportunities to propose and lead projects that impact your local community, including more than $1 million since 2015 in Habitat for Humanity builds, scholarships, and other pro bono community projects.
  • Access to our Professional Development Grants program, created to encourage professional development and further LPA's collective knowledge as a firm. Over the life of the grant program, we have invested $1,196,890 and impacted 848 LPA employees.

What We're Looking For:
Required:
  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Interior Design, Interior Architecture, or Architecture.
  • 5+ years of professional experience across all phases of interior architecture and interior design projects.
  • NCIDQ certification (or actively pursuing certification) required.
  • Proficiency in Revit required.
  • Strong understanding of building codes, accessibility requirements, construction materials, detailing, and specifications.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently while contributing creative ideas and technical solutions throughout the design process.
  • Proven commitment to producing high-quality, accurate, and well-coordinated construction documents.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.

Preferred:
  • LEED accreditation.
  • experience with Rhino and Adobe Creative Suite.

LPA is an integrated design firm with offices in California and Texas. We specialize in creating innovative, sustainable environments that work better, do more with less and improve people's lives. We provide a vibrant and rewarding work environment-one that values and fosters creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, community engagement and ongoing career development and growth. LPA is also committed to diversity, wellness and work-life balance. LPA offers competitive salaries and generous benefits, including health and dental insurance, retirement and financial, wellness and other work/life plans.
If you are hired at LPA, your base salary is based on factors such as geographic location, skills, education, experience and/or project complexity. We believe in the importance of pay equity and consider internal equity of our current team members as part of any final offer.
