Description
Cary is seeking an Intelligent Transportation System Specialist I to be a key player in our traffic systems operations as we expand our services and drive to innovate the industry. This role will allow you to develop and utilize specialized skills in the maintenance and repair of the electronics and fiber optics of our regional transportation system.
Our Intelligent Transportation System Specialists are essential in maintaining over 220 signalized intersections. They assist in the installation, maintenance and repair of ITS devices, which include fiber optic and cellular technologies, CCTV devices and various complex detection systems. ITS Specialists also maintain our connected vehicle technologies and Accessible Pedestrian Systems for the traffic signal system network. From preventative maintenance, field assembly, testing, diagnostics and repair of devices the Intelligent Transportation System Specialist I is at the forefront of keeping our community's essential services running smoothly. You will be supported by a higher-level specialist as your learn, exchange ideas, and problem-solve all while unleashing your full potential. An ITS Specialist I is a key member of the Adverse Weather Response Team. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Intelligent Transportation System Expeditor.

Typical Tasks
Assists with the installation, maintenance, and repair of ITS devices to include: fiber optic and cellular technologies, CCTV devices, various complex detection systems, connected vehicle technologies, GPS preemption, optical preemption, Accessible Pedestrian Systems, Programmable Logic Controllers;
Assists with the safety procedures required on all work sites;
Assists with replacement of defective devices and makes necessary adjustments to fiber splices, ethernet switches, CCTV cameras all associated hardware and software packages;
Assists with Installation, maintenance, repairs and programming, annual times for the school flasher system, and rectangular rapid flashing beacons;
Operates heavy equipment to install devices;
Assists with, pole transfers, fiber relocations, fiber repairs, and troubleshoots fiber communication malfunctions;
Assists with Preventative Maintenance on CARY fiber optic communication system;
Assists coordination with other governmental, organizational, and utilities personnel;
Assists with the installation of new traffic control equipment to upgrade existing intersections in accordance with engineering plans;
Assists with the inspection of work performed by outside agencies;
Interprets blueprints, schematics and drawings;
Learns to interface through laptop computer software diagnostic packages to interrogate, upload and download information from ITS devices to include: various detection devices, Malfunction Management Units, school beacon programming, rectangular rapid flashing beacons, and connected vehicle technologies, Accessible Pedestrian Systems;
Responds to emergency service calls on an on-call basis on a rotating schedule;
Assists with, preventative maintenance and regularly scheduled checks on traffic signals, CCTV, detection, fiber plant equipment, school flasher beacons, rectangular rapid flashing beacons, and connected vehicle technologies;
Installs and programs accessible pedestrian pushbuttons;
Assists with testing, documentation, and installation, of Malfunction Management Units in accordance with NCDOT requirements;
Assists on field review during IDT Plan Review
Sets out traffic control signs and barricades for special events;
Responds to emergency situations with traffic signs and barricades as requested by the Police Department;
Conducts and maintains traffic sign inventory to keep list of ordained signs current;
Conducts and maintains traffic sign inventory to keep list of Town Council list of ordained signs current;
Inspects signs to ensure retro-reflectivity requirements are met;
Installs and repairs streets, traffic, and related signs according to standards set by the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD); Including Speed Sentry and Flashing Stop Signs
Performs other job-related tasks as required.

Physical Requirements
Work in this class is often heavy work and may require exposure to various environmental conditions such as heat, cold, and rain. An employee must have the physical agility to move about freely including climbing, reaching stooping, digging, etc. Work is performed in a bucket truck so an employee must be able to work at heights up to 60 ft. Moderate to heavy lifting is required in performing the work. Visual acuity is necessary to perform paperwork, read testing equipment, and make repairs requiring very good vision. An employee must also be able to hear and talk.
Minimum and Preferred Qualifications
Any combination of education, training and experience equivalent to graduation from high school with 1-2 experience working in governmental, industrial or commercial electronics.
Possession of a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
Special Requirements
International Municipal Signals Association (IMSA) Work Zone Safety and Level I certification within one year of employment
National Incident Management System (NIMS) ICS 100 and ICS 700 training/certification required (provided)
Requires possession of a valid Class "B" Commercial Driver's Licenses, with an acceptable driving record or ability to achieve within 6 months.
Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal history check, motor vehicle records check, education verification and credit history review) and satisfactory reference checks prior to employment.
