Both roles require similar educational backgrounds, but their daily tasks and industry usage differ significantly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Integration Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Integration Developer, you need strong programming skills (often in Java, Python, or similar languages), experience with APIs, and a solid understanding of data formats like XML and JSON, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with integration platforms (such as MuleSoft, Dell Boomi, or Apache Camel) and knowledge of cloud services and middleware systems are common technical requirements. US Citizenship is required. Experience delivering for Federal or Public Sector (e.g., Government & Public Services) environments is strongly preferred.
Required eligibility
- US Citizen (required)
- Ability to support Federal/Public Sector clients and comply with applicable background checks and onboarding requirements (as applicable)
Key responsibilities
- Design and implement integrations using SAP Integration Suite (Cloud Integration/CPI, API Management, Open Connectors as needed).
- Build secure, reliable interfaces between SAP S/4HANA and external systems (cloud and on-prem), including event/message-based and API-led integrations.
- Develop and maintain iFlows, mappings, adapters, exception handling, retries, and monitoring dashboards/alerts.
- Implement and manage SAP BTP connectivity patterns (Cloud Connector, destinations, certificates, OAuth/SAML, principal propagation where applicable).
- Develop and consume S/4HANA APIs (OData, SOAP, IDoc, RFC/BAPI) and support integration with SAP Gateway and related services.
- Collaborate with functional and technical teams to translate requirements into integration designs, interface specifications, and test plans.
- Perform troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and performance tuning across integration runtimes.
- Support CI/CD and transport processes for integration artifacts (versioning, promotion, approvals), aligned to program controls.
- Produce documentation: interface catalogs, runbooks, support procedures, and security artifacts.
Required qualifications (must-have)
- 5-8+ years in SAP integration development (or equivalent depth), including significant work on SAP BTP Integration Suite/CPI.
- Strong SAP S/4HANA back-end integration experience (APIs/IDoc/RFC/BAPI; understanding of common S/4 integration objects and patterns).
- Hands-on skills in:
- Message formats: JSON, XML, XSD/WSDL, flat files
- Groovy scripting in iFlows (and/or Java where applicable)
- Mapping (graphical/message mapping), value mapping, content modifiers
- Security: OAuth2, mTLS/certificates, PGP (as needed), key management basics
- Experience with integration monitoring/operations (MPLs, tracing, error handling, alerting, SLAs).
- Ability to work independently, lead technical workstreams, and mentor junior developers.
Preferred qualifications (nice-to-have)
- Prior delivery for Federal / Public Sector organizations (regulated environments, audits, ATO-like controls, strict change management).
- Experience with SAP Event Mesh, asynchronous/event-driven integration patterns.
- Knowledge of SAP ABAP debugging basics for interface troubleshooting.
- Familiarity with SAP IAS/IPS, SSO patterns, and enterprise identity integrations.
- Experience integrating with common platforms (e.g., ServiceNow, Salesforce, Boomi/MuleSoft ecosystems, Azure/AWS services).
- Exposure to SAP BTP services beyond Integration Suite (e.g., logging/monitoring services, Cloud Foundry/Kyma basics).
Typical deliverables
- Integration architecture/designs, interface specifications, iFlow packages
- API proxies/policies (API Management), security configurations
- Test evidence (unit/integration), deployment/rollback plans
- Runbooks, operational dashboards, knowledge transfer materials
