Hastings Insurance is seeking an experienced Middle Market Commercial Underwriter to help drive profitable growth throughout Michigan. In this highly visible, field-based role, you'll serve as a trusted partner to independent agencies, balancing sound underwriting judgment with relationship management and business development. You'll represent Hastings in the marketplace, identify growth opportunities, evaluate complex commercial risks, and help strengthen our position in a territory that plays a key role in our long-term success.

Working closely with our Territory Sales Managers, you'll help agencies place profitable business with Hastings while delivering the underwriting expertise and responsiveness that support lasting partnerships. This role is ideal for a commercially minded underwriter who enjoys building relationships, collaborating with agents, and contributing directly to business growth while maintaining underwriting discipline.

Location & Schedule:
  • This is a full-time, salaried position working Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • This is a remote position supporting an assigned territory within Michigan. Preference will be given to individuals located in the Metro Detroit, Metro Lansing, or Metro Grand Rapids/Kalamazoo areas; however, candidates throughout the state will be considered.
  • Regular travel throughout the assigned territory is expected to support agency visits, relationship development, and business growth initiatives. A company vehicle is provided.
 What You'll Do:
  • Develop and strengthen relationships with independent agency partners throughout Michigan, serving as a trusted underwriting resource and advocate for profitable growth.
  • Identify opportunities to grow Hastings' Middle Market Commercial portfolio by partnering with agencies to write profitable new business while maintaining underwriting discipline.
  • Conduct agency visits and serve as Hastings' field representative within the assigned territory.
  • Work closely with Territory Sales Managers and internal business partners to support agency development and territory growth strategies.
  • Review, evaluate, and underwrite new and renewal middle market commercial business in accordance with underwriting guidelines and authority levels.
  • Analyze commercial risks, exposures, pricing, and coverage needs to support sound underwriting decisions.
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of commercial products, coverages, pricing strategies, and underwriting appetite.
  • Collaborate with agents, policyholders, and internal business partners to deliver responsive, service-oriented underwriting support.
  • Partner with Marketing, Loss Control, Claims, and Underwriting teams to support agency development and corporate growth objectives.
  • Provide guidance on coverage interpretation, pricing considerations, and underwriting best practices to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with underwriting directives, regulatory requirements, and company guidelines regarding risk selection and pricing.
  • Contribute to departmental training initiatives, professional development activities, and continuous improvement efforts.
 What You'll Bring:
  • Bachelor's degree in Insurance, Business, Finance, or a related field preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.AU, CPCU, or other industry designations preferred.
  • 5+ years of commercial lines underwriting experience, preferably within middle market business segments.
  • Demonstrated success evaluating commercial risks and making sound underwriting decisions across a variety of industries and exposures.
  • Proven ability to build, maintain, and grow relationships with independent agency partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify new business opportunities and contribute to profitable commercial growth.
  • Experience balancing business development objectives with disciplined risk selection and profitability goals.
  • Strong knowledge of commercial insurance products, coverages, pricing, and underwriting principles.
  • Proficiency with underwriting systems, agency management tools, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Excellent communication, relationship-building, organization, and time management skills.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel regularly throughout the assigned territory.
