Job description

The Senior Portfolio Underwriter at HSB holds the paramount responsibility for managing, monitoring, expanding, and optimizing the portfolio products for the company's largest and most critical client company relationships. This role is central to achieving profit and growth objectives and is a cornerstone of HSB's strategic initiative to foster business growth. It involves acting as a catalyst in the introduction of new products and managing the performance of existing client companies.
As a thought leader for clients, the Senior Portfolio Underwriter is tasked with devising innovative solutions by tapping into HSB's comprehensive resources, encompassing data, products, and services. The role demands a tactical deployment of HSB's capabilities to maximize and enhance client partnerships.
In collaboration with Product Managers and the Underwriting Lead, the Senior Portfolio Underwriter utilizes creative data analysis methods, such as diagnostic and predictive analytics, to gain a deep understanding and optimization of product performance. These analytical techniques are essential for developing targeted strategies for corrective actions, ensuring rate adequacy, precise price segmentation, and identifying emerging loss trends. This responsibility includes a thorough examination of claims, engineering reports, expenses, exposure data/profile shifts, pure premium trends, and third-party exposure data.
The Senior Portfolio Underwriter is also responsible for crafting and delivering compelling client presentations externally. These presentations are designed to effectively communicate financial results, data analyses, rate assessments, and evolving loss trends, positioning the Senior Portfolio Underwriter as the technical authority for both clients and the Client Integration Team.
With underwriting binding authority, the Senior Portfolio Underwriter independently makes crucial underwriting decisions that directly influence the financial outcomes of their assigned portfolio, thereby impacting the company's P&L.
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelors or equivalent work experience is required
  • 7+ years of P&C insurance/reinsurance experience
    • 5+ years in Underwriting preferred
  • Demonstrated understanding of commercial and personal lines insurance and reinsurance coverage, concepts, principles, exposures and processes to drive profitable results
  • Demonstrated ability to translate large data analysis into actionable decisions
  • Demonstrated understanding of rate development (pure premium), price segmentation & detecting leading loss trends
  • Past experience with responsibility for achieving profit and growth targets for a book a business.
  • Demonstrated experience with negotiation and conflict resolution
  • Exhibited ability to develop creative and unique solutions
  • HSB Product knowledge and Previous Experience and familiarity with HSB is desired
