Accident & Health Underwriting Experience required.
About the Team:
As part of the Corporate Solutions (CorSo), North America, Accident & Health Team, you will join a team of experienced underwriters, focused on profit-oriented underwriting for Employer Stop loss coverage of self-funded employer health plans. Our Underwriters analyze claims experience, loss ratio, and other group-specific data to evaluate risk and develop optimal coverage solutions for our clients. We collaborate with the sales team, assigned client groups, and underwriting management to generate proposals, resolve account management issues, and service customers.
About the Role:
Underwriting:
  • Production underwriter responsible for handling review of policies and procedures for both new and existing risks for self-funded employer health plans Accounts vary from Middle/Upper Middle Market, as well as Fortune 500 businesses.
  • Understand and apply commercial insurance principles to complex situations
  • Understand and apply data analytics to ensure we are adequately pricing for the risk under consideration
  • Consistently demonstrate adherence to authority limits and underwriting controls to effectively manage exposure
  • Able to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of both standard and non-standard policy wordings, extensions and limitations. Able to identify when to alter policy terms and the resulting impact
  • Understand the drivers of performance within the portfolio and provide recommended steering actions that positively influence outcomes

Customer Focus:
  • Manage the definition, development and delivery of Accident & Health insurance products to ensure alignment with customer needs
  • Accurately spot trends in early stages and collaborate to improve product offerings and financial results
  • Review and challenge market/customer strategies, applying in-depth market understanding and innovative views
  • Inspire a sense of urgency from the customer/ broker and CorSo decision makers to design win-win situations
  • Consistently demonstrate effective influencing and negotiation skills to deliver the best outcomes for CorSo

Team/Relationship Focus:
  • Develop and maintain successful relationships with external clients and brokers
  • Focus on building relationships across the team and wider organization. Actively work to support the end to end journey
  • Coach and mentor less experienced Underwriters
  • Inspire colleagues to embrace the mandate of their business areas in achieving Corporate Solutions' strategy
  • Lead internal (technical/organizational) and/or provide technical expertise for external (market/client development) projects and marketing efforts
  • Support the business in developing appropriate analytical processes and outputs

About You:
Educational/Professional:
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field (Finance, Actuarial Science) preferred or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 5 years underwriting experience in Accident & Health
  • In depth knowledge of insurance, with a focus on commercial Accident & Health underwriting
  • Strong connection within the Employer Stop Loss insurance market
  • Experience in producing a profitable portfolio of business within your underwriting authority
  • Strong analytical skills to assess exposures, coverages, terms and conditions to appropriately assign underwriting decision on risks
  • Knowledge and proficiency in the use of underwriting tools, applications, guidelines, and data analytics
  • Keeps abreast of market environment and trends

The estimated base salary range for the Senior Underwriter level in Windsor CT or Schaumburg IL is $128,000 to $192,000. The specific salary offered for this or any given role will take into account a number of factors including but not limited to job location, scope of role, qualifications, complexity/specialization/scarcity of talent, experience, education, and employer budget. This means that we consider all components of compensation in their totality (such as base pay, short-and long-term incentives, and benefits offered), in setting individual compensation.
