Job Summary and Qualifications

The Risk Manager develops, coordinates, and administers facility-wide systems for risk identification, investigation and reduction. The Manager maintains a network of informational sources and experts. The Manager performs risk surveys and inspects patient care areas, as well as reviews facility and assesses loss potential.

What you will do in this role:

  • Participate in committees as directed (EOC and others as designated by the CQ/PSO.
  • Maintain risk management statistics and files in compliance with Joint Commission and state and federal agencies; promote maximum confidentiality by limiting access of such information.
  • Collect, evaluate, and distribute relevant data concerning patient complaints; patient injuries; aggregate data summaries, monthly trend analyses of incidents, claims profiles and workers’ compensation trends; provide aggregate analysis of risk data; maintain statistical trending of losses and other risk management data.
  • Informs department leaders regarding occurrences, issues, findings, and risk management suggestions; provide feedback to directors at all levels in the effort to eliminate risks; assist department leaders in designing risk management programs within their departments.
  • Work with legal counsel to coordinate the investigation, processing, and defense of claims against the facility; record, collect documents, maintain, and provide to defense attorney any requested information and documents necessary to prepare testimony in pending ligations.
  • Advise security on procedures to reduce the frequency and/or minimize the severity of property loss or assets.
  • Provide assistance to departments in complying with Joint Commission or other accrediting agencies, regarding risk management related standards.
  • Recommend appropriate revisions to new or existing policies and procedures to reduce the frequency of future occurrences; recommend ways to minimize risks through system changes; review and revise facility policies as appropriate to maintain adherence to current standards and requirements.
  • Investigate and analyze actual and potential risks in the institution; assess liability and probability of legal action for potential notification of insurance carriers.
  • Directly refer to the Chief Quality and Patient Safety Officer those incidents with claims potential; report to higher authority any serious events involving actual or potential injury to patients, visitors, or employees.
  • Investigate patient complaints and ensure timely resolution as per the organizational policy and regulatory standards.
  • Take an active role in FEMA (Failure, Mode and Effects Analysis).
  • Act as resource, internal consultant, and educator for patient safety/risk management issues.
  • Actively participate in Root Cause Analysis.
  • Investigate risk involving actual or potential injury to patients, visitors, and employees; collect information as necessary to prepare for the defense of claims.

What qualifications you will need:

  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of Tennessee or compact state required.
  • 3 years of related experience required.
