What is an insurance producer broker?

Insurance Producer Brokers are licensed professionals who help clients find and purchase insurance policies that best fit their needs. They act as intermediaries between insurance companies and customers, providing expert advice and comparing different coverage options. Unlike agents who may represent a single insurer, brokers typically work with multiple insurance companies to offer clients a wider range of products. Their goal is to ensure clients have adequate protection while securing the best value. Insurance Producer Brokers must adhere to state licensing requirements and ethical standards.

How do insurance producer brokers balance client acquisition with ongoing account management responsibilities?

Insurance Producer Brokers often split their time between seeking out new clients and maintaining relationships with existing ones. A typical week may involve prospecting, networking, and conducting client meetings, while also managing renewals, policy changes, and claims support. Balancing these responsibilities requires strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks. Many brokers work closely with account managers, underwriters, and customer service representatives to ensure clients' needs are met efficiently. This collaborative environment helps brokers grow their book of business while providing high-quality service to current clients.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an insurance producer broker, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Insurance Producer Broker, you need a solid understanding of insurance products, risk assessment, sales acumen, and must typically hold a state-specific insurance license. Familiarity with customer relationship management (CRM) software, quoting systems, and industry compliance tools is essential. Strong interpersonal skills, negotiation abilities, and persistence help build client relationships and close sales. These skills ensure brokers can effectively match clients with appropriate policies, maintain regulatory compliance, and sustain a successful book of business.

Understanding these differences helps clients choose the right professional for their insurance needs.

How much do insurance producer brokers get paid?

Insurance producer brokers typically earn a combination of base salary and commissions, with total compensation ranging from $40,000 to over $100,000 annually depending on experience, location, and sales performance. Successful brokers often rely heavily on commissions from policies sold, and additional income may come from bonuses or incentives for meeting sales targets.

What does an insurance producer broker at an insurance brokerage do?

An insurance producer broker at an insurance brokerage sells and services insurance policies to clients, helping them select coverage options that meet their needs. They assess client risks, explain policy details, and often work to develop new business through prospecting and networking, typically requiring licensing and strong communication skills.

Why do most insurance producer brokers quit?

Insurance producer brokers often leave the profession due to high competition, challenging sales targets, and the pressure to build a client base. The job requires strong sales skills, persistence, and often involves irregular income, which can lead to burnout and turnover.

Job description

Description:

Marine Insurance Producer - CA, MO, UT, AZ

American Marine Insurance is seeking an experienced marine insurance professional to join our team as a Marine Insurance Producer. This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about the marine sector and wants to specialize deeply, not sell generalist personal or commercial lines.

If you have hands-on experience with marine risks, we want to connect with you.

What You’ll Do

  • Develop and grow a book of marine-focused business
  • Work with yacht, charter, commercial marine, and specialty marine clients
  • Build strong relationships with carriers, brokers, and marine industry partners
  • Provide consultative guidance to clients with complex or unique marine exposures
  • Collaborate with internal teams to deliver exceptional service and tailored solutions
Requirements:

 What You Bring

  • Significant marine insurance expertise - AMIM designation is a plus
  • Experience producing or supporting yacht, charter, commercial marine, or specialty  marine accounts
  • Active Property & Casualty license
  • A passion for specialization over high-volume, multi-line selling
  • Strong relationship-building skills and a consultative sales approach

Who Thrives Here

  • Producers who want to be true marine specialists
  • Professionals who value autonomy, expertise, and long-term client relationships
  • Individuals who prefer quality over quantity and depth over generalization

This is not an entry-level role and not a call-center sales environment. It’s a career path for someone who wants to build a respected presence in the marine insurance community.
