Accountant
Location: Milwaukee, WI
Department: Finance/Accounting
Reports To: Controller
Position Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Accountant to assist in the accounts payable function and support the financial operations of our independent insurance agency. This role is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, overseeing key accounting processes, and ensuring compliance with GAAP. The ideal candidate will have experience in account reconciliations, strong analytical skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
*Please note this is not a remote position*

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger activity, journal entries, and account reconciliations
  • Support month-end close by ensuring all financial transactions are accurately recorded and properly reported
  • Prepare and maintain monthly bank reconciliations for cash accounts
  • Support external audits, including preparation of required documentation
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, company policies, and applicable local and state regulations
  • Collaborate with internal teams (producers, account managers, accounting, leadership) to ensure accurate financial reporting
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes and enhance efficiency within accounting operations
  • Serve as a point of contact for accounting-related matters, providing guidance and support to internal stakeholders while ensuring accuracy and consistency across financial processes
  • Take ownership of assigned accounting areas, driving accountability, improving workflows, and ensuring deadlines and deliverables are consistently met
Accounts Payable Oversight
  • Assist in full-cycle accounts payable process, including invoice intake, coding and entry.
  • Review and approve invoices for accuracy, proper authorization and correct GL coding.
  • Maintain vendor records including W-9s and 1099 reporting compliance.
  • Resolve vendor inquiries and discrepancies in a timely manner.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 3+ years of accounting experience; insurance agency experience preferred
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and preferred knowledge of insurance accounting practices
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel
  • High attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Applied Epic or similar agency management systems
  • CPA or CPA-eligible
  • Background in an independent insurance agency environment
