NORTHWEST INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT Job Title: Bus Monitor (0721) Reports to: Operations Manager Dept. / Campus: Transportation Wage/Hour Status: Non-Exempt Duty Days: 180 Pay Grade: B01 Date Revised: 05/2023 Primary Purpose: Ride buses and help driver ensure safe and orderly transportation of students with disabilities Qualifications:
  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Ability to move actively through large numbers of people in a limited amount of space
  • Ability to act responsibly
  • High School Diploma / GED
  • Ability to follow verbal instructions and communicate effectively
  • Ability to complete Monitor Evaluation showing capabilities of fulling job description
  • Ability to operate safety equipment and adaptive equipment
  • Ability to work well with children with disabilities Ability to manage student behavior
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others
  • School experience preferred
Major Responsibilities and Duties: Student Management:
  • Instruct students on safe entering, exiting, and passenger rules and regulations
  • Supervise students as they board and leave bus and cross street
  • Take children into building and help them find their way
  • Learn and adapt to each student's special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs
  • Maintain discipline and use effective behavior management control over groups of students
  • Report student discipline problems to appropriate administrator and communicate with teachers and parents regarding student's behavior when warranted
  • Perform emergency evacuation of students on bus when the situation warrants it
  • Lift and carry students with disabilities on and off the bus according to their individual needs
Routes & Schedules:
  • Become familiar with all routes to and from school campus to be of assistance to driver
  • Maintain an updated route schedule
Safety:
  • Supervise use of seatbelts, harnesses, or car seats by students
  • Follow emergency procedures and help driver administer first aid, if necessary
  • Operate equipment according to established safety procedures
  • Follow established procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including:
    • Lifting
    • Assisting students
    • Other duties as assigned
Other:
  • Become familiar with and follow procedures established by transportation and special education offices
  • Help driver keep bus clean
  • Work irregular hours (Split Shift)
  • Perform other duties as assigned
