We are looking to hire an Intermediate Instrumentation and Controls specialist in our Edmonton Office and Calgary location. Reporting to the Instrumentation & Controls Lead, the Instrumentation and Controls specialist will provide instrumentation and controls support on multiple projects in varying size, scope, and complexity, ensuring that technical excellence, cost, schedule, and contractual requirements are achieved.

  1. Has current knowledge of SmartPlant Instrumentation
  2. Has designed PLCs and communication networks
  3. Has 6+ years of experience in instrumentation, communication, and controls.
  4. Has worked for an EPC and created Engineering Work Packages.

EXPERIENCE & ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS

  • Technical Diploma in Instrumentation, Electrical, Chemical, or Mechanical Engineering or related bachelor’s degree
  • 6+ years of direct Instrumentation, Communication & Controls experience in the oil and gas industry is a must; previous EPC experience is a must.
  • Professional registration with APEGA or ASET in the province of Alberta. Registration in other provinces is an asset.
  • Current experience with SmartPlant Instrumentation.

RESPONSIBILITES

  • Help instrumentation and controls design to execute assigned projects varying in scope and complexity.
  • Support client instrumentation, communication, and controls request as required.
  • Development of deliverables to meet project and client requirements, such as instrument data sheets, instrument specifications, schematics and wiring diagrams, control narratives, shut down keys, communication network diagrams, P&IDs as required.
  • Perform instrumentation and controls design work involving DCS, PLC, SCADA, control panels, analyzers, analytical equipment, metering, control equipment and other instruments.
  • Participation in HAZOP, PHA and SIL studies as required.
  • Development of and assistance with project design criteria, design basis, work scopes, technical documents, cost estimates, schedules, specific instrumented systems for equipment, skid, module packages, and other project related documents.
  • Review of vendor drawings and documents for compliance.
  • Assistance with generation of operating manuals, specifications, and guidelines.
  • Development of technical documents and design information for regulatory applications with respect to instrumented systems.
  • Interpretation and assistance with codes (ASME, ANSI, API, CEC, ISA).
  • Provide support to the project team in the execution of their project responsibilities.
  • Provide technical leadership, and mentor and supervise junior team members as required.
  • Travel to field for project scoping, verification, construction support, and meeting with clients.
  • Following developing technologies in instrumentation, communication, and control.
  • Completion of other relevant duties as required.
  • Working knowledge (design/implementation) of communication networks.

  • Ability to handle very detailed work and demonstrate a high level of accuracy. 
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to multi-task and manage multiple deadlines.
  • Must be able to work in a team environment.
  • Well-developed critical thinking skills, strong analytical abilities, and a continuous improvement mindset. 
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite and PDF editing programs (Bluebeam, Adobe) used to create reports and documents.
