Commercial HVAC Lead Technician

Company: Our Client
Location: New York City, NY & New Jersey (Field Projects) | Brooklyn HQ

About Our Client

Our client is a rapidly growing commercial HVAC contractor based in Brooklyn, NY, serving clients throughout New York City and New Jersey. The company specializes in high-quality design-build mechanical systems across commercial, retail, hospitality, education, and institutional projects. Their reputation is built on technical excellence, accountability, and strong problem-solving capabilities.


Position Overview

Our client is seeking an experienced Commercial HVAC Lead Technician to lead complex installations, system start-ups, controls integration, commissioning, troubleshooting, and service operations across active commercial projects.

This is a senior-level, hands-on field role ideal for a technician with strong commercial HVAC expertise, advanced controls knowledge, and the ability to independently manage technical field operations while maintaining professional communication with internal teams and clients.

Key ResponsibilitiesInstallation & Field Execution
  • Lead installation of commercial HVAC systems including:

    • Water Source Heat Pumps (WSHP)

    • Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) systems

    • Rooftop Units (RTUs)

    • Dedicated Outside Air Systems (DOAS)

    • Air handling units, fan coil units, and ductwork tie-ins

  • Ensure installations meet project drawings, specifications, code requirements, and manufacturer standards

  • Coordinate daily field activities with foremen and installation crews

Controls & System Integration
  • Install, wire, configure, and troubleshoot HVAC controls and interlocks

  • Integrate dampers, fans, exhaust systems, air curtains, unit heaters, and related equipment

  • Install and commission:

    • VFDs (Variable Frequency Drives)

    • VAV boxes

    • Zone control systems

    • Sensors (CO2, temperature, humidity, pressure, occupancy)

    • Relays, transformers, contactors, and time clocks

  • Coordinate with BMS/controls subcontractors for system integration and turnover

Troubleshooting & Service
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and controls-related HVAC issues

  • Respond to service calls independently and efficiently

  • Identify root causes of failures and implement long-term solutions

  • Coordinate with manufacturer technical support as needed

Start-Up & Commissioning
  • Perform HVAC equipment start-ups and commissioning procedures

  • Verify sequences of operation and system performance

  • Complete punch-list items and closeout documentation

  • Coordinate with Test & Balance agencies and commissioning teams

  • Prepare accurate and professional service/start-up reports

Communication & Leadership
  • Communicate effectively with project teams, General Contractors, building engineers, architects, and ownership representatives

  • Support and guide field crews during installations and start-up activities

  • Maintain professional documentation and reporting standards

  • Represent the company professionally on all project sites


Required Qualifications
  • Minimum 10 years of commercial HVAC experience

  • Minimum 4 years in a lead technician or senior field technician role

  • Strong experience with WSHP, VRF, RTU, and DOAS systems

  • Advanced electrical and controls troubleshooting experience

  • Strong understanding of:

    • VFDs

    • VAV systems

    • HVAC controls and interlocks

    • Refrigerant leak detection systems

    • Sensors and low-voltage controls

  • Ability to read and interpret:

    • Mechanical drawings

    • Electrical schematics

    • Controls diagrams

    • Submittals and specifications

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Valid driver's license with clean driving record


Required Certifications
  • EPA Section 608 Universal Certification

  • NYC FDNY G-60 Certification

  • NYC FDNY F-60 Certification

  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety

  • NYC SST Card
