What is an inpatient nurse practitioner?

An Inpatient Nurse Practitioner is an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) who provides medical care to patients admitted to hospitals or other inpatient facilities. They work collaboratively with physicians and healthcare teams to assess, diagnose, and manage acute or complex illnesses. Inpatient NPs may perform physical exams, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe medications, and develop treatment plans. Their role is essential in ensuring high-quality care, improving patient outcomes, and supporting efficient hospital workflows.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an inpatient nurse practitioner?

To thrive as an Inpatient Nurse Practitioner, you need advanced clinical assessment skills, a master's or doctoral degree in nursing, and national board certification as an NP. Familiarity with hospital-based electronic health record (EHR) systems and clinical decision support tools is essential. These competencies ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality care for hospitalized patients, while supporting collaboration with multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
