The Formulations Scientist will be part of Innospec’s global Home Care technical team that formulates and commercializes ingredients used in the household, industrial and institutional cleaning markets (HI&I). In this role as the technical lead for the Americas region, formulation demands will come from customers, market requirements for cleaning applications and novel concepts developed by Innospec R&D. This position requires a detail oriented individual who can manage and organize data on numerous lab activities, be able to multi-task and problem solve, while maintaining a clear sense of priorities and focus. An ideal candidate will have a unique blend of hands‑on formulation experience, skills in organic chemistry with the ability to provide technical expertise in written and oral presentations. As a part of the Home Care technical and business organization you will participate in joint development projects and shared customer opportunities with the global team. This position reports to the Technical Manager for Home Care, I&I.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Provide technical, regulatory and application assistance to Innospec customers as required to manage the day-to-day technical customer support through:
  • answering inquiries on products and applications
  • formulation development in the laboratory
  • performing analytical and application tests
  • Work with Innospec customers, sales and production teams to define and develop new products.
  • Develop commercially viable formulations that successfully meet customer and market demands for performance, economics and regulatory compliance.
  • Research new developments and raw materials for product development to meet new market demands.
  • Visit customers to promote our products, develop opportunities for collaboration and to help solve application technical issues involving our products.
  • Develop relationships with key vendors and maintain an awareness of market trends for both raw materials and finished goods.
  • Represent the company at various industry technical events.
  • Assist internal Innospec regulatory team in changes in regulatory demands and anticipated new regulatory restrictions.

Candidate should have a solid working knowledge on surfactants, their properties and chemical composition with demonstrated formulation experience in detergents or surfactant based products. Candidates with a strong background in formulation development across a wide range of Home Care formulation categories including Bathroom Cleaner, Floor Cleaner, Kitchen Cleaner, Laundry Detergent, Laundry Additive, Toilet Bowl Cleaner and Window Cleaner will be preferred. The ability to provide solutions to market issues such as changing regulatory requirements is required. Understanding and application knowledge of formulations, performance testing, stability and other physical characteristics is also required.

  • Minimum of a BS in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Biochemistry. Degrees in other scientific disciplines will be considered with an advanced degree in a relevant field a plus.
  • 5 years of experience in formulation and applications in detergents industry or with surfactants manufacturers
  • Domestic and international travel will be required, with up to 25% of time on travel.
  • Very effective communicator, both written and oral, and excellent team player
  • Position will be located in Salisbury, NC
Main Responsibilities
  • Take care of the day-to-day technical customer support through lab work performing standard laboratory analytical and Home Care application tests.
  • Visit customers to help them solve application technical issues involving our products.
  • Collect analytical and performance data on existing product portfolio
  • Develop Detergents Formulations
  • Produces R&D samples on Lab and Pilot scale
  • Keep accurate records of the day‑to‑day lab activities, issue detailed technical reports in a reasonable time frame
  • Contribute in drafting patent applications to protect new product developments and new technologies
