Infrastructure System Engineer information

What engineers make $500,000 a year?

Highly experienced infrastructure system engineers with specialized skills in cloud computing, cybersecurity, and large-scale network management can earn salaries approaching or exceeding $500,000 annually, especially in senior or executive roles. Such compensation often includes bonuses, stock options, or profit sharing, and typically requires advanced certifications and extensive industry experience.

What does an infrastructure system engineer do?

An infrastructure system engineer designs, implements, and maintains the hardware, software, and network systems that support an organization's IT environment. They troubleshoot system issues, optimize performance, and ensure security and reliability, often working with tools like servers, cloud platforms, and monitoring software. Strong technical skills, certifications, and knowledge of networking and system administration are essential for this role.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior infrastructure system engineers with extensive experience, specialized skills in cloud platforms, cybersecurity, and automation, and often holding advanced certifications can earn $300,000 or more annually. These roles typically require leadership responsibilities, complex project management, and working in high-demand industries such as technology or finance.

What engineers make $200,000 a year?

Senior infrastructure system engineers, especially those with extensive experience, specialized skills in cloud platforms, cybersecurity, or network architecture, can earn $200,000 or more annually. High salaries are often associated with roles in large organizations, requiring advanced certifications and leadership responsibilities.

What is the difference between Infrastructure System Engineer vs Network Engineer?

AspectInfrastructure System EngineerNetwork Engineer
CertificationsCompTIA Network+, Cisco CCNA, Microsoft certificationsCompTIA Network+, Cisco CCNA, Juniper JNCIA
Work EnvironmentData centers, server rooms, cloud environmentsNetwork operations centers, enterprise networks
Industry UsageIT infrastructure, cloud services, enterprise systemsTelecommunications, enterprise networking, internet service providers

While both roles require networking certifications and involve working with IT infrastructure, Infrastructure System Engineers focus on overall system architecture, servers, and cloud integration, whereas Network Engineers specialize in designing, implementing, and maintaining network hardware and connectivity. Understanding these differences helps employers and candidates align skills with job requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by Infrastructure System Engineers when managing large-scale systems?

Infrastructure System Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring system scalability, maintaining high availability, and minimizing downtime during updates or incidents. Monitoring and proactively addressing security vulnerabilities across complex, distributed environments is another critical aspect. Collaborating with cross-functional teams, such as development and operations, is essential to align infrastructure changes with business goals and rapidly address emerging issues. Staying current with evolving technologies and best practices helps in overcoming these challenges effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Infrastructure System Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Infrastructure System Engineer, you need a strong background in systems administration, networking, and IT infrastructure management, usually backed by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like VMware, Microsoft Azure, AWS, Linux/Windows servers, and certifications such as CompTIA Network+, Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator, or AWS Certified Solutions Architect are typically required. Problem-solving, teamwork, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating across departments and responding to critical incidents. These skills and qualifications are crucial for maintaining reliable, secure, and scalable IT environments that support business operations.

Job description

Stellar Solutions, a nationally recognized “Great Place to Work”, has exciting opportunities providing Engineering solutions for innovative new-entrant space companies, as well as established space systems manufacturers, commercial space system operators and service providers, and other industry stakeholders including investors.

At Stellar Solutions, we offer talented, energetic, and immediately productive resources to satisfy our customers’ critical needs in systems engineering and integration, mission operations, program management and strategic planning. We are a leading service and expertise provider for high-tech commercial ventures, spanning communications, earth observation and remote sensing systems and data products, to the infrastructures that support earth orbiting and beyond earth orbit businesses.

Stellar Solutions is searching for a System Engineer to support the development of a ground infrastructure that supports and enables space and ground elements to prototype new satellite and tactical mission capabilities, demonstrating their scalability and operational utility.

The ideal candidate possesses excellent communication skills and technical expertise in designing, developing, building, and integrating ground systems that provide communications, data management, and operations infrastructure to support mission operations. A successful candidate must be a team player and problem solver with a proven ability to deliver superior results as part of a high-performing team in a high-profile, fast-paced environment. The candidate will apply advanced principles, theories, and concepts in innovative ways for highly classified systems while also helping implement system engineering processes that ensure successful execution of the program and delivery of the system that achieves the mission requirements.

In this role, the successful candidate will:

  • Take ownership of the system and subsystem design description documentation supporting the system Lifecycle Reviews ensuring alignment with the system architecture and ICDs, both internal and external.
  • Support the Requirements development and management for the program including the flow-down allocations, technical budgets, and RVTM development.
  • Support coordination with the customer and associated system users to get agreement on overall system approaches and operational constraints.
  • Support development of the Interface Control Documentation for various external and internal system interfaces.
  • Support development of the architecture description, models, and other architecture products in an agile development environment while meeting mission requirements.
  • Translate complex ideas and data into simple, actionable recommendations or easily differentiated courses of action.
  • Communicate clearly, concisely, and with technical accuracy-oral and written.
  • Support a customer committed to the rapid development of mission capabilities that meet the evolving needs of the warfighter.

Required skills:

  • Minimum five (5) years of relevant experience with space or ground system architecture, requirements management, and interface definition.
  • Experience supporting system lifecycle activities including design, integration, test, and transition to operations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience authoring documentation and overall System Engineering experience in the technical design, build, I&T, and transition to operations of satellite systems.
  • Experience with Integrated Master Schedules, and risk management.
  • Experience with agile development programs and methodologies.
  • Strong writing and communication skills.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to develop and present recommendations and solutions for technical problems/issues.

Desired skills:

  • Minimum ten (10) years of relevant experience on space and ground system development programs for the DoD or IC.
  • Extensive experience in ground architectures, networks, and cloud environments.
  • Extensive experience in the management of ground resources, such as ground entry points (GEP).
  • Experience leading engineering teams with demonstrated success.

Education

  • Relevant BS in Eng or related STEM degree (MS preferred).

Clearance:

  • Active TOP SECRET clearance with eligibility for sensitive compartmentalized information (SCI) and special access program (SAP) clearances (SCI preferred).

Compensation:

The typical pay range for this position is USD $135,000 - $195,000 per year.  Individual pay is determined by many factors including work location, job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. This position is also eligible for a discretionary annual performance bonus, retirement plan and other benefits (all included as part of package).

This role offers the opportunity to shape next-generation space and ground capabilities for high-priority national security missions, working directly on programs where your expertise drives real operational outcomes.
