What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in infrastructure automation, and why are they important?

To thrive in Infrastructure Automation, you need expertise in scripting (such as Python or Bash), cloud platforms, configuration management, and a solid understanding of networking and systems administration, often backed by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Ansible, Terraform, Docker, Jenkins, and relevant certifications (e.g., AWS Certified DevOps Engineer) is commonly required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective collaboration are essential soft skills for excelling in this role. These skills and qualifications are crucial for efficiently designing, deploying, and managing scalable, reliable, and secure infrastructure in fast-paced technology environments.

What are some common challenges faced in an infrastructure automation role, and how can I overcome them?

Professionals in Infrastructure Automation often encounter challenges such as integrating new automation tools with legacy systems, managing configuration drift, and ensuring robust security in automated environments. Overcoming these hurdles typically involves staying up-to-date with automation frameworks, collaborating closely with development and operations teams, and implementing thorough testing and monitoring procedures. Building effective documentation and fostering a culture of continuous improvement also help address these challenges and support smoother automation processes.

What is infrastructure automation?

Infrastructure automation refers to the process of using technology to automatically manage, deploy, and maintain IT infrastructure, such as servers, networks, and storage. This approach eliminates the need for manual intervention, reducing human error and speeding up processes. Common tools for infrastructure automation include Ansible, Terraform, and Puppet. It enables organizations to scale efficiently, maintain consistency, and improve reliability in their IT environments.

What is the difference between Infrastructure Automation vs Cloud Engineer?

AspectInfrastructure AutomationCloud Engineer
Required CredentialsCertifications like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud; scripting skillsCloud platform certifications; scripting and networking skills
Work EnvironmentData centers, on-premises infrastructure, hybrid environmentsCloud platforms, virtual environments, cloud services
Employer & Industry UsageIT departments, data centers, enterprise infrastructureCloud service providers, tech companies, startups
Search & Comparison IntentFocus on automation tools, scripting, infrastructure setupFocus on cloud deployment, architecture, and services

While both roles involve working with cloud and infrastructure technologies, Infrastructure Automation specialists focus on automating and managing physical and virtual infrastructure using scripting and automation tools. Cloud Engineers primarily design, deploy, and manage cloud-based solutions. Understanding these differences helps organizations find the right expertise for their infrastructure needs.

Description & Requirements
Description
The Corporate Technology Group designs, deploys, and supports Bloomberg's platforms and systems used by more than 21,000 employees across 170+ offices worldwide. The team supports critical infrastructure services that enable internal applications, data platforms, engineering workflows, and enterprise operations across Bloomberg.
What's the Role?
As an Infrastructure Automation Engineer, you will help shape the next phase of Bloomberg's infrastructure operating model as we move corporate services toward internal cloud consumption and platform-based delivery. Working as part of a global engineering team, you'll build automation, tooling, telemetry, and Infrastructure as Code capabilities that make today's infrastructure easier to operate, secure, and scale, while reducing toil and enabling a smoother transition to future platform services.
We'll Trust You To
  • Develop and maintain automation, tooling, telemetry, observability, and Infrastructure as Code capabilities that simplify how large-scale compute and storage platforms are operated and supported.
  • Automate key parts of the infrastructure lifecycle, including provisioning, configuration, testing, monitoring, compliance, capacity planning, and ongoing support.
  • Build orchestration workflows, API integrations, reusable patterns, and standards that make infrastructure easier to consume, secure, operate, and evolve consistently at scale.
  • Implement CI/CD pipelines and modern software delivery practices including version control, testing, peer review, documentation, and code quality to support repeatable, controlled, and reliable infrastructure change.
  • Reduce operational overhead by automating manual, repetitive, or high-friction processes and increasing self-service capability.
  • Partner across engineering, operations, and the broader organization to improve reliability, supportability, and platform adoption while contributing to the continued evolution of our infrastructure operating model.

You'll Need to Have
  • 4+ years of experience developing software using languages such as Python, Java, C/C++, or similar.
  • Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • Experience with infrastructure automation, orchestration, or Infrastructure as Code tools such as Ansible, Airflow, Terraform, Chef, Salt, Puppet, or similar.
  • Experience automating lifecycle processes for enterprise infrastructure platforms, including provisioning, configuration, monitoring, maintenance, and support across compute, storage, or virtualization technologies.
  • Experience building tools and integrations that use REST APIs or similar interfaces to interact with infrastructure platforms, management systems, or operational data sources.
  • Strong familiarity with the full software delivery lifecycle, including requirements, design, development, testing, version control, peer review, CI/CD, documentation, deployment, and support.
  • Ability to take ownership, communicate clearly, collaborate effectively, and drive work to resolution across engineering, operations, and stakeholder groups.

We'd Love to See
  • Broad awareness of enterprise infrastructure technologies across server and storage hardware, virtualization, block and file storage protocols and presentation, and telemetry.
  • Knowledge of Linux internals, network protocols, storage protocols, and infrastructure security.
  • Familiarity with databases and the infrastructure patterns used to support application or database platforms.
  • Understanding of security fundamentals, operational risk, and standard methodologies in large-scale enterprise environments.
  • Exposure to platform engineering, private cloud, internal cloud, self-service infrastructure, or infrastructure consumption models.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work independently and collaborate effectively across engineering and operations teams.
