What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Infrastructure Automation Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Infrastructure Automation Engineer, you need a solid background in IT infrastructure, scripting languages (like Python or Bash), and experience with automation frameworks, typically backed by a relevant degree or certifications such as AWS Certified DevOps Engineer. Familiarity with tools like Ansible, Terraform, Jenkins, and cloud computing platforms is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication set top candidates apart in this field. These skills and qualities ensure reliable, scalable, and efficient infrastructure management that supports rapid business growth and minimizes downtime.

How does an Infrastructure Automation Engineer typically collaborate with development and operations teams?

Infrastructure Automation Engineers often work closely with both development and operations teams to streamline deployment pipelines and ensure environments are consistent and reliable. They consult with developers to understand application requirements and design automated solutions for provisioning infrastructure, while also partnering with operations to maintain system stability and troubleshoot issues. Effective communication and cross-team collaboration are essential, as these engineers typically act as a bridge between the two groups, ensuring that automation supports both rapid development and robust, secure operations.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior infrastructure automation engineers, cloud architects, and site reliability engineers with extensive experience, advanced certifications, and expertise in tools like Terraform, Kubernetes, and cloud platforms can earn $300,000 or more annually. High compensation often reflects leadership roles, specialized skills, and working in large-scale or high-demand environments.

What does an infrastructure automation engineer do?

An infrastructure automation engineer designs, develops, and maintains automated systems to manage and provision IT infrastructure, such as servers, networks, and cloud resources. They use tools like Ansible, Terraform, or Puppet to improve efficiency, reduce manual effort, and ensure consistent deployment and configuration across environments.

What are Infrastructure Automation Engineers?

Infrastructure Automation Engineers are IT professionals who design, implement, and manage automated systems that deploy, configure, and maintain technology infrastructure. Their work ensures that servers, networks, and applications are provisioned and managed efficiently, often using tools like Ansible, Terraform, or Puppet. By automating repetitive tasks, they help organizations improve scalability, reliability, and speed of infrastructure management. These engineers typically collaborate with development, operations, and security teams to create seamless and resilient IT environments.

What engineers make $500,000 a year?

Senior infrastructure automation engineers with extensive experience, specialized skills in scripting and cloud platforms, and often certifications like AWS or Azure can reach or exceed a $500,000 annual salary, especially in high-cost-of-living areas or senior leadership roles. Such compensation typically includes base salary, bonuses, and stock options in large organizations or tech companies.

What is the difference between Infrastructure Automation Engineer vs DevOps Engineer?

AspectInfrastructure Automation EngineerDevOps Engineer
Primary FocusAutomating infrastructure provisioning and managementIntegrating development and operations for continuous delivery
Skills & CertificationsCloud platforms, scripting, automation toolsCI/CD, scripting, cloud, containerization
Work EnvironmentIT/Infrastructure teams, cloud providersDevelopment and operations teams, cloud environments
Industry UsageIT, cloud service providers, enterprise infrastructureSoftware development, tech companies, startups

While both roles involve automation and cloud skills, Infrastructure Automation Engineers focus on automating infrastructure setup, whereas DevOps Engineers integrate development and operations processes for continuous delivery and deployment.

Will AI replace automation engineer?

AI can automate many tasks within the role of an infrastructure automation engineer, such as scripting, configuration management, and monitoring. However, automation engineers are needed to design, implement, and oversee complex systems, requiring skills in problem-solving, system architecture, and adapting AI tools to specific environments. AI is a tool that enhances their work rather than fully replacing the role.

Job description

We are seeking an Infrastructure Automation Developer to help build automation, tooling, and internal services that support a modern hybrid infrastructure environment (on-prem and cloud).
This role is ideal for an early-career Infrastructure Engineer, Systems Administrator, or DevOps professional who enjoys using software to improve how systems operate. You will work closely with a hands-on technical lead to turn real operational workflows into repeatable automation, infrastructure tooling, and scalable internal services.
This is not a traditional operations role focused on day-to-day system maintenance. Instead, this role focuses on building automation and infrastructure software that improves system reliability, observability, and operational efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
  • Develop infrastructure automation and tooling using modern software practices (primarily .NET)
  • Convert scripts and manual processes into repeatable infrastructure services and internal tools
  • Build automation to improve system reliability, observability, and scalability
  • Translate infrastructure architecture and system behavior into working code and APIs
  • Support systems across hybrid environments (on-premise and cloud)
  • Develop middleware, adapters, and internal infrastructure services connecting existing systems
  • Collaborate with operations and engineering teams supporting multiple products and services
  • Participate in technical design reviews and iterative solution development
  • Document infrastructure tooling and architecture decisions for future maintainability

Required Qualifications
  • 2-4 years of professional experience in Infrastructure Engineering, Systems Administration, DevOps, or Software Development
  • Understanding of IT infrastructure architecture, including cloud, on-premise, and hybrid environments
  • Experience using a general-purpose programming language or framework (such as .NET)
  • Familiarity with APIs, HTTP services, and service-to-service communication
  • Experience running, debugging, and inspecting applications in production environments
  • Exposure to infrastructure automation, systems integration, or internal tooling development
  • Experience using Git or other source control systems
  • Familiarity with CI/CD concepts
  • Ability to work with partial requirements and build practical solutions

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with containers (Docker or similar)
  • Familiarity with Linux environments
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines
  • Exposure to AWS, Azure, or other cloud platforms
  • Experience building automation tools, internal platforms, or infrastructure services

Education
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
Pay Range: $50 / hour
