What is an infrastructure automation engineer?

Infrastructure Automation Engineers are IT professionals who design, implement, and manage automated systems that deploy, configure, and maintain technology infrastructure. Their work ensures that servers, networks, and applications are provisioned and managed efficiently, often using tools like Ansible, Terraform, or Puppet. By automating repetitive tasks, they help organizations improve scalability, reliability, and speed of infrastructure management. These engineers typically collaborate with development, operations, and security teams to create seamless and resilient IT environments.

How does an infrastructure automation engineer typically collaborate with development and operations teams?

Infrastructure Automation Engineers often work closely with both development and operations teams to streamline deployment pipelines and ensure environments are consistent and reliable. They consult with developers to understand application requirements and design automated solutions for provisioning infrastructure, while also partnering with operations to maintain system stability and troubleshoot issues. Effective communication and cross-team collaboration are essential, as these engineers typically act as a bridge between the two groups, ensuring that automation supports both rapid development and robust, secure operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an infrastructure automation engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Infrastructure Automation Engineer, you need a solid background in IT infrastructure, scripting languages (like Python or Bash), and experience with automation frameworks, typically backed by a relevant degree or certifications such as AWS Certified DevOps Engineer. Locations: Lafayette, LA | Knoxville, TN | Birmingham, AL | Columbia, SC
Work Arrangement: Hybrid
Employment Type: Full time
Experience Required: 8+ years
Position Overview
We are seeking a Senior Cloud Automation Engineer to join a Cloud Infrastructure & Engineering team focused on automating AWS infrastructure, networking, and security functions.
This is an engineering-focused Infrastructure/Network Automation role requiring strong Python development, AWS networking, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), and AWS-native automation experience.
The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience building and maintaining scalable automation solutions for AWS infrastructure and network environments. This is not a traditional DevOps, Cloud Administrator, Application Developer, or GenAI Engineer position.
Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and enhance AWS infrastructure automation frameworks and reusable automation solutions.
  • Build Python-based automation for AWS infrastructure, networking, and security operations.
  • Automate provisioning and management of AWS networking resources and configurations.
  • Automate VPCs, subnets, routing, security groups, NACLs, and other network security controls.
  • Develop and maintain Infrastructure as Code solutions using AWS CloudFormation.
  • Automate cloud network provisioning, security controls, routing, and configuration management.
  • Maintain and enhance existing production automation platforms and scripts.
  • Develop solutions for network security automation and network monitoring/enrichment.
  • Support automation for deployment of new AWS networking services.
  • Leverage AWS-native services to build event-driven and scalable automation solutions.
  • Collaborate with Infrastructure, Architecture, Cybersecurity, Information Security, and engineering teams.
  • Work within an Agile, sprint-based development environment.
Required Qualifications
  • 8+ years of overall IT/software engineering experience.
  • Strong hands-on experience with AWS infrastructure and cloud automation.
  • Strong Python development experience — mandatory.
  • Significant experience automating infrastructure rather than simply administering AWS through the console.
  • Strong understanding of AWS networking and network security.
  • Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC).
  • Strong experience with AWS CloudFormation.
  • Experience developing scalable, reusable automation frameworks and scripts.
  • Strong engineering and problem-solving mindset

Why Join Us?
You will have the opportunity to work on high-impact cloud data initiatives supporting enterprise risk and analytics with one of world class fortune 500 companies. This role offers exposure to modern AWS technologies, complex data challenges, AI-enabled automation, and cross-functional collaboration within a major financial services environment.
