What is an Infrastructure Architect?

An Infrastructure Architect is an IT professional responsible for designing, implementing, and managing the foundational technology systems of an organization. They create blueprints for networks, servers, storage, and other infrastructure components to ensure they support business goals and future growth. Their role involves assessing current systems, recommending improvements, and ensuring security, scalability, and reliability. Infrastructure Architects work closely with other IT teams and stakeholders to align technology with organizational needs.

What are some typical challenges Infrastructure Architects face when designing scalable systems, and how can they be addressed?

Infrastructure Architects often encounter challenges like ensuring high availability, balancing performance with cost, and integrating new technologies with legacy systems. Addressing these involves thorough capacity planning, leveraging automation and cloud services for scalability, and working closely with security and operations teams to maintain compliance and reliability. Successful architects stay updated on emerging technologies and foster strong communication with stakeholders to ensure infrastructure aligns with business needs.

This senior individual contributor role shapes future-state infrastructure architecture and ensures systems are designed for availability, resiliency, and operability from the outset.
Based in the United States and working onsite, the senior infrastructure architect partners with application engineering, platform engineering, reliability, security, and service management teams to translate strategy into scalable, supportable infrastructure. • Ensure infrastructure designs support availability, resiliency, operability, and alignment with business objectives.
  • Architect systems with failure modes, high availability, and recovery considerations as core design requirements.
  • Lead architecture reviews and technical decision forums that guide cross-domain consistency and architectural integrity.
  • Partner with reliability, operations, and service management teams to ensure infrastructure supports observability, incident response, and continuous improvement.
  • Mentor engineering and platform teams through technical guidance, architectural standards, and trusted expertise.
  • Evaluate emerging infrastructure technologies with a focus on long-term value, operational maturity, and stability.

Success in This Role Looks Like
  • Infrastructure designs reduce unplanned downtime and improve system resilience.
  • Architecture standards are clear, trusted, and consistently adopted across teams.
  • Operational incidents result in fewer surprises and faster recovery.
  • Architectural visibility improves understanding of service ownership and dependencies.
  • Infrastructure systems scale reliably as Applied Medical grows.

Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check.

  • Applies strong technical depth across multiple domains including cloud platforms, data center infrastructure, networking, identity management, automation, and observability.
  • Mentors and guides senior engineers and technical leaders without direct authority.
  • Communicates complex infrastructure concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred
