How much do infrared thermographer jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 18, 2026, the average hourly pay for infrared thermographer in the United States is $29.79, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $24.04 and $33.65 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does an infrared thermographer do?

An infrared thermographer uses thermal imaging cameras to detect and analyze heat patterns and temperature differences in various structures and equipment. They often work in industries such as electrical, mechanical, and building inspections, and typically require certification and knowledge of thermal imaging technology. Their findings help identify issues like electrical faults, insulation problems, or leaks before they cause failure or damage.

How to become a thermography technician?

To become a thermography technician, individuals typically need to complete specialized training in infrared thermography, often through certification programs offered by organizations like the Infrared Training Center (ITC). Gaining hands-on experience with infrared cameras and obtaining certification such as the Level I or Level II Thermographer credential is essential for employment in this field.

What is the difference between Infrared Thermographer vs Electrical Technician?

AspectInfrared ThermographerElectrical Technician
CertificationsLevel I or II Thermography CertificationElectrical certifications (e.g., Journeyman, Master Electrician)
Work EnvironmentInspecting buildings, industrial equipment, electrical systems using thermal imagingInstalling, maintaining, repairing electrical systems
Industry UsageConstruction, manufacturing, energy, facilities managementConstruction, maintenance, industrial facilities

While both roles may work in industrial settings, Infrared Thermographers focus on thermal imaging inspections to identify issues, whereas Electrical Technicians perform hands-on electrical work. Certifications and work environments overlap in industrial and facility settings, but their primary functions differ significantly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Infrared Thermographer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Infrared Thermographer, you need a solid understanding of thermal imaging principles, building systems, and electrical/mechanical diagnostics, typically supported by Level I or higher thermography certification. Familiarity with infrared cameras, thermal analysis software, and reporting tools is essential for accurate data collection and interpretation. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication help thermographers identify issues and convey findings to clients or maintenance teams. These skills ensure precise inspections, reliable problem-solving, and clear reporting, all of which are critical for preventing costly failures and ensuring safety.

What is a Level 1 infrared thermography certification?

A Level 1 infrared thermography certification is an entry-level credential that verifies a technician's basic understanding of infrared imaging principles, safety, and equipment operation. It typically involves training in image acquisition, interpretation, and documentation, and is often required for entry-level thermographers working in building inspections, electrical, or mechanical systems.

How much does it cost to get thermography certified?

Infrared thermographers typically pay between $2,000 and $4,000 for certification courses, which include classroom instruction and hands-on training. Additional costs may include exam fees, study materials, and certification renewal every few years, depending on the certifying organization.

What are some common challenges faced by Infrared Thermographers in the field, and how can these be managed?

Infrared Thermographers often encounter challenges such as difficult access to equipment, varying environmental conditions, and the need to accurately interpret thermal images. Working in industrial settings may require adherence to strict safety protocols and coordination with operational staff to schedule inspections during safe periods. To manage these issues, thermographers should maintain up-to-date training, use the proper personal protective equipment, and communicate closely with maintenance and operations teams to ensure both safety and data accuracy.
