Job description

Instructor, Computer Information Technology - South Campus
Position Summary:
  • San Jacinto College is seeking an experienced, hands on instructor to join our Computer Information Technology programs. Our programs span networking, systems administration, programming, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and data analytics. The curriculum pairs foundational technical knowledge with applied lab work that reflects current industry practice.
  • The ideal candidate brings professional experience as a practitioner in at least one of these disciplines, with working familiarity across the remaining areas. That familiarity should include network infrastructure and protocols, operating systems and server administration, programming fundamentals, security operations and defensive practice, applied machine learning and generative AI tools, and data handling, analysis, and visualization. Just as important is a demonstrated commitment to teaching and to student success. Faculty are expected to stay current in a fast moving field and to pursue ongoing professional development.
  • This is a 9-month faculty position. Full-time faculty are assigned to teach courses using various delivery methods based on the teaching area and the needs of students and the College. This position requires a physical presence on campus.

Responsibilities:
Teaching:
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest developments in information technology, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence.
  • Demonstrate and uphold high academic and professional standard.
  • Provide constructive feedback to students and respond to inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Teach courses at times and locations that meet student needs.
  • Provide access to students through posted conference hours, electronic communications, and other appropriate methods.
  • Evaluate and recommend learning materials that support course objectives.
  • Develop syllabi and course materials, including hands-on applied lab activities, aligned with state, college, and departmental standards.
  • Participate in the design and implementation of innovative course content and teaching materials that cover emerging trends in information technology, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies.

Professional Development:
  • Engage in activities that maintain competence in the discipline and teaching methodologies through professional development opportunities.
  • Reflect on and evaluate teaching practices and program curricula.
  • Meet or exceed professional, industry, higher education, and state-mandated standards and requirements relevant to the discipline.
  • Utilize effective teaching methods and materials that reflect thoughtful planning, assist students in meeting course objectives, are appropriate for students with different backgrounds and learning styles, and engage students in learning.

Service:
  • Actively contribute to college meetings, committees, task forces, and community activities.
  • Support student recruitment, retention, and academic success.
  • Assist department in maintaining program and college accreditation standards.
  • Participate in college activities for students and student organizations.
  • Participate in business and community activities that foster goodwill, industry partnerships, and promote the mission and values of the college.
  • Engage in departmental and institutional planning and budgeting processes.
  • Maintain departmental affiliation agreements and partnerships with other institutions.
  • Work with the academic department to identify opportunities for curriculum enhancement, based on feedback from students, alumni, and industry partners.

Other Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with industry experts and academic colleagues to continuously update and enhance the various computer information technology program curricula, ensuring it aligns with current industry standards and technological advancements.
  • Engage in the evaluation and adoption of cutting-edge educational technologies and methodologies to improve student learning outcomes.
  • Assist leadership in the establishment of industry partnerships to provide students with internships, mentorships, and job placement opportunities, enhancing the practical relevance of the various computer information technology programs.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Industry experience and expertise in information technology, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, data analytics, and related fields.
  • Ability to engage students.
  • Proficiency in contemporary teaching methods and technologies.

Required Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence, or a related discipline. Relevant fields include but are not limited to Computer Engineering, Information Systems, Network Security, Computer Science, or Data Science.

Required Experience:
  • Three years of full-time work experience in information technology, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, or related roles.
  • Direct professional experience in technology operations. Relevant areas include network and systems administration, security operations, incident response, risk management, digital forensics, threat analysis, security architecture, artificial intelligence, data pipeline and analytics work, and the deployment and management of technical systems and applications.
  • Familiarity with security, privacy, and AI governance frameworks such as NIST CSF, the NIST AI Risk Management Framework, CIS Controls, and ISO/IEC 27001.

Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Master's degree in Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence, or a related discipline. Relevant fields include but are not limited to Computer Engineering, Information Systems, Network Security, Computer Science, or Data Science.
  • College teaching experience.
  • Five years of full-time professional experience in information technology, including work in areas such as systems and network administration, security operations, software development, data analytics, or related roles.

Preferred Licenses/Certifications:
One or more current industry certifications relevant to the teaching area. Examples include the following.

Cybersecurity

Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Engineer Associate (AI-102)
  • Google Cloud Professional Machine Learning Engineer or Professional Data Engineer
  • AWS Certified Machine Learning Engineer Associate
