The UAMS Department of Biomedical Informatics is a vibrant environment for research. It hosts multiple National Institutes of Health and National Cancer Institute (NIH/NCI) funded projects and provides biomedical informatics insights to the entire UAMS community. The expertise and research interests of the Department of Biomedical Informatics (DBMI) faculty cover multiple key disciplines of Biomedical Informatics, including Imaging Informatics, Bioinformatics, Clinical Research Informatics, and Semantic Web technologies in the life sciences.

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) maintains high performance computing facilities for research use by faculty and staff, as well as collaborators across the UA system. The UAMS Department of Biomedical Informatics (DBMI) provides all system administration and operations support functions for HPC on the UAMS campus. UAMS is collaborating to build statewide capacity for high-performance computing and the advanced digital infrastructure needed to support AI research. The long-term goal is to establish sustainable, powerful computing resources designed for AI workloads to support research and analytics.
The ideal candidate will assist with the installation, configuration, and maintenance of the HPC software and hardware, provide technical support and troubleshooting for the users and work with research faculty, staff, and students to provide specialized expertise in new fields such as ML/AI, data manipulation and analysis, and visualization.
As a faculty member in Biomedical Informatics the successful candidate will be expected to acquire grant funding to support their independent research agenda and to assist or lead applications for funding to support and expand the Center for High Performance computing.
Qualifications:
  • Terminal degree in Biomedical Informatics, Computer Science, Data Science, or a comparable scientific or technical discipline.
  • Experience with system administration in a Linux environment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of Linux server configuration, including RHEL, CentOS, or an equivalent operating system.
  • Knowledge of system scripting, security practices, and network protocols.
  • Demonstrated analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and learn emerging technologies.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in an HPC environment.
  • Experience with cluster file systems, job scheduling, workflow management, and resource management tools.
  • Experience with tools such as Moab, Maui, or TORQUE.
  • Experience with Singularity, Docker, or other container technologies.
  • Knowledge of parallel computing techniques, including multithreading and Message Passing Interface (MPI).
  • Experience with GPU computing and optimizing software for high-performance computing environments.
  • Experience supporting machine learning, artificial intelligence, data-intensive research, or scientific visualization.
  • Demonstrated experience developing or contributing to grant-funded research.
