Job description

Job Description / Duties

The Propulsion Base Software Low Level Driver Engineer is responsible for the design and development of embedded base software for EE/core and propulsion control modules, with a strong emphasis on low-level driver development and hardware-software integration. This role includes requirements analysis, detailed design, implementation, integration, and validation of high-performance, safety-critical software components.

The engineer will lead complex driver development activities, interface directly with hardware and semiconductor teams, and ensure robust, production-ready software aligned with AUTOSAR architecture and automotive standards. Deep expertise in microcontroller peripherals, silicon behavior, and low-level debugging is critical to success in this role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and own low-level driver software for ICE, hybrid, and electric propulsion control modules, including direct interaction with microcontroller hardware.
  • Develop and integrate hardware abstraction and MCAL drivers, including customization and optimization of AUTOSAR MCAL modules.
  • Implement device drivers for advanced peripherals such as SPI, I2C, UART, SENT, CAN, LIN, ADCs, PWM, GTM, timers, watchdogs, DMA, and interrupt controllers.
  • Design and develop drivers for power electronics interfaces, including HSD/LSD drivers, H-Bridge control, injector drivers, and gate driver IC interfaces.
  • Interface directly with microcontroller registers, memory-mapped I/O, and peripheral control units, ensuring correct initialization, configuration, and runtime behavior.
  • Analyze and interpret hardware schematics, MCU reference manuals, and datasheets to design accurate and efficient driver implementations.
  • Lead hardware-software integration and bring-up activities, including early silicon validation and debugging on prototype ECUs.
  • Perform advanced debugging of low-level issues using Lauterbach, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, trace tools, and bus analyzers.
  • Diagnose and resolve timing, concurrency, interrupt, and multicore synchronization issues in real-time environments.
  • Optimize drivers for deterministic real-time performance, low latency, efficient memory usage, and high reliability.
  • Collaborate with Base Software Architecture teams to ensure alignment with AUTOSAR stack, RTE integration, and OS scheduling.
  • Conduct detailed reviews of requirements, low-level design, register configurations, and embedded C/C++ implementations.
  • Ensure compliance with MISRA-C, ASPICE, and ISO 26262, including support for safety mechanisms such as diagnostics, fault handling, and safe states.
  • Design and execute driver-level verification strategies, including unit testing, integration testing, hardware validation, and fault injection.
  • Contribute to virtualization, SIL/HIL, and simulation-based validation of low-level drivers.
  • Develop and maintain detailed technical documentation, including register-level design specs, timing diagrams, and interface definitions.
  • Collaborate with semiconductor vendors, hardware teams, and ECU suppliers to debug silicon-level issues and ensure correct driver behavior.
  • Support production software delivery, vehicle integration, and launch activities.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
  • 5 years of related experience
  • Experience with embedded C/C++ software development experience in a real-time operating system (RTOS) environment.
  • Experience in AUTOSAR Base Software development and MCAL configuration (OS, MCAL, IOHWAB, FEE, WDG, etc.).
  • Strong hands-on experience in low-level driver development with direct register-level programming.
  • Understanding of microcontroller architecture, including cores, memory hierarchy, interrupts, DMA, and peripheral subsystems.
  • Experience with multicore microcontrollers, synchronization, and inter-core communication.
  • Strong analytical, debugging, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively in cross-functional teams.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Engineering (Electrical, Computer, or related discipline).
  • Hands-on experience with automotive microcontrollers such as Infineon AURIX (TriCore), NXP, Renesas, or similar platforms.
  • Experience with advanced MCU peripherals such as GTM, eMIOS, high-speed timers, ADC synchronization, and signal acquisition chains.
  • Experience developing or integrating complex device drivers (CDD) beyond standard MCAL.
  • Strong understanding of power electronics control interfaces, including inverters, battery systems, and motor control.
  • Experience with AUTOSAR tools such as Vector DaVinci, EB tresos, or ETAS ISOLAR.
  • Strong ability to interpret hardware schematics, MCU datasheets, and reference manuals.
  • Experience in hardware-software integration and bring-up of embedded systems.
