What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during an Industrial Engineer Internship?

As an Industrial Engineer Intern, you will typically assist with process improvement initiatives, data collection and analysis, and workflow optimization projects. Interns often collaborate closely with manufacturing, logistics, and quality assurance teams to identify inefficiencies and propose solutions. You may be involved in mapping out current processes, conducting time studies, and using industrial engineering tools like Lean or Six Sigma. This hands-on experience provides valuable insight into real-world manufacturing environments and helps build a foundation for a full-time industrial engineering role.

How to get an industrial engineering internship?

To secure an industrial engineering internship, candidates should have a strong foundation in engineering principles, proficiency with tools like CAD or simulation software, and relevant coursework or projects. Applying through company career portals, leveraging university career services, and networking with industry professionals can increase chances of success.

Is a 3.0 GPA good for internships?

For an industrial engineer internship, a 3.0 GPA is generally considered acceptable, especially if complemented by relevant coursework, technical skills, and practical experience. Many employers value a strong skill set and project work alongside GPA when evaluating candidates for internships.

What do industrial engineering interns do?

Industrial engineering interns assist with analyzing production processes, optimizing workflows, and improving efficiency. They often work with data analysis tools, observe operations, and support project implementation under supervision, gaining practical experience in manufacturing or service environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Industrial Engineer Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Industrial Engineer Intern, you need a solid background in industrial engineering principles, data analysis, and process improvement, typically supported by progress toward a relevant bachelor's degree. Familiarity with tools like AutoCAD, Excel, simulation software, and Lean Six Sigma methodologies is often required. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help you collaborate effectively and present your findings. These abilities are essential for contributing to efficiency projects and supporting continuous improvement in manufacturing or operations environments.

Is there a high demand for industrial engineers?

Industrial engineers are in consistent demand across manufacturing, healthcare, logistics, and technology sectors due to their skills in process optimization and efficiency improvement. Employment opportunities are expected to grow faster than average, making internships in this field valuable for gaining practical experience and entering the job market.

The candidate must establish a high level of knowledge over the product or products they oversee.

Why Work for CaptiveAire?

  • Nation's leading manufacturer of commercial kitchen ventilation systems, and now offering a complete solution of fans, heaters, ductwork and HVAC equipment. Our primary purpose is to provide fully integrated, sustainable HVAC Systems.
  • Leader in the industry for over 40 years with innovative technologies, unmatched service, competitive pricing, and rapid lead times.

  • Strong commitment to the development of our employees, including continuous education opportunities like sponsorship for Professional Engineering license and continuous education through weekly webinars and company developed technical videos

What our employees have to say:

One of the things I appreciate most about CaptiveAire is how strongly it embodies the entrepreneurial spirit. I'm empowered with the autonomy to manage my work independently, while also benefiting from the robust support and resources of a large, well-established company.

We want to stay on the cutting edge and so are constantly sourcing and utilizing the best equipment available. Any position can provide feedback that is listened to and incorporated into processes. Collaboration is key at CaptiveAire and so there is no being "Silo-ed" into one area.

CaptiveAire is fast-moving and no-nonsense. We operate differently than any other company that I've worked for with our decentralized structure. Quick action is taken when a good idea is presented. We are focused on end users where the rest of the industry is very short-sighted. We are on the front lines, actively changing the landscape of the HVAC industry.

A Day in the Life:

A typical day often includes collaborating with our manufacturing team to better understand day-to-day processes and roadblocks. Workshopping ideas with other IEs at different plant locations is essential to ensure a companywide implementation success.

Typical tasks also include taking a lead role in project and process implementation across all plants, facilitating communication and task completion and serving as center point of communication across all manufacturing plants.

From an IE: Continuous improvement is a heavy focus and so there is an ability to get involved in tasks that range from small quick process improvements to larger company-wide projects that must be collaborated with directors.
