What is an indirect tax professional?

Indirect tax professionals specialize in taxes that are not directly paid by individuals but are instead levied on goods and services, such as Value Added Tax (VAT), Goods and Services Tax (GST), sales tax, and excise duties. Their main responsibilities include advising businesses on compliance with relevant tax laws, preparing and submitting tax returns, identifying tax-saving opportunities, and ensuring that companies adhere to complex and changing regulations. They often work closely with legal, accounting, and finance teams to manage tax risks and support business operations.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an indirect tax professional?

To excel in Indirect Tax, you need a solid understanding of tax regulations, accounting principles, and a relevant degree such as accounting, finance, or law. Familiarity with tax software (like SAP, Oracle, or Vertex), advanced Excel skills, and professional certifications such as CTA or CPA are highly beneficial. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for interpreting regulations and advising clients or stakeholders. These skills ensure accurate compliance, minimize risk, and add value to organizations navigating complex tax environments.

What are common challenges faced by professionals working in indirect tax roles?

Professionals in Indirect Tax often encounter the challenge of keeping up with frequently changing tax regulations across multiple jurisdictions, especially if working for multinational organizations. Ensuring compliance while optimizing tax processes can be complex due to varying VAT, GST, and sales tax rules. Additionally, indirect tax specialists must regularly collaborate with finance, supply chain, and IT teams to implement system changes and support business operations. Managing audits and addressing queries from tax authorities also form a significant part of the role.

Job description

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Indirect Tax Manager to join our tax team. This role will be responsible for managing the company’s indirect tax compliance, reporting, and risk management activities across multiple jurisdictions.

The ideal candidate is a strong technical tax professional who can balance attention to detail with a broader business perspective. You will partner closely with Finance, Accounting, Legal, Operations, and external advisors to ensure the organization remains compliant while identifying opportunities to improve processes, systems, and overall tax efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the company’s indirect tax obligations, including sales and use tax, VAT, GST, excise tax, and other transaction taxes as applicable.
  • Oversee indirect tax compliance, including return preparation/review, payments, registrations, exemptions, and related filings.
  • Monitor changes in federal, state, and local indirect tax legislation and assess their impact on the business.
  • Manage tax audits, notices, inquiries, and other governmental interactions related to indirect taxes.
  • Partner with Accounting and Finance to ensure accurate tax calculations, accruals, reconciliations, and reporting.
  • Provide guidance on indirect tax implications of new products, services, transactions, contracts, and business initiatives.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve indirect tax processes, controls, and technology.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders and external tax advisors on complex indirect tax matters.
  • Support tax technology initiatives, including tax engines, ERP systems, automation, and data-quality improvements.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation, policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Assist with special projects, acquisitions, expansions into new jurisdictions, and other strategic initiatives as needed.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with cross-functional business partners.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Tax, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of progressive indirect tax experience, preferably with a combination of public accounting and industry experience.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. sales and use tax and other indirect tax concepts; international VAT/GST experience is a plus.
  • Experience managing tax compliance, audits, notices, and research across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Experience working with ERP systems and/or indirect tax technology such as Vertex, Avalara, or similar platforms.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong business judgment and the ability to communicate complex tax matters clearly to non-tax stakeholders.
