To thrive as an Indirect Tax Specialist, you need a strong understanding of tax laws and regulations, analytical skills, and typically a degree in accounting, finance, or law. Familiarity with ERP systems like SAP or Oracle, and tax compliance software such as Vertex or Avalara, as well as relevant certifications like CTA or CPA, are highly valuable. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication make professionals stand out in this role. These skills are crucial for ensuring compliance, minimizing risks, and providing accurate tax advice to support organizational decision-making.

What are indirect taxes?

Indirect taxes are taxes that are levied on goods and services rather than on income or profits. These taxes are typically collected by intermediaries, such as retailers or manufacturers, who then pass the tax on to the government. Common examples include value-added tax (VAT), sales tax, excise duties, and customs duties. Indirect taxes are ultimately paid by the end consumer as part of the purchase price, making them different from direct taxes, which are paid directly to the government by individuals or businesses.

What do you do in indirect taxes?

In an indirect taxes role, you analyze and manage the calculation, reporting, and compliance of taxes such as sales tax, value-added tax (VAT), and excise duties. The job often involves working with tax regulations, using accounting software, and ensuring accurate tax filings to avoid penalties.
