What is an indirect loan officer?

An indirect loan officer is a financial professional who works with third-party vendors, such as auto dealerships, to facilitate loans between the lender (usually a bank or credit union) and the borrower. Instead of dealing directly with the customer, indirect loan officers review and process loan applications submitted through these partners. Their responsibilities often include underwriting loans, ensuring compliance with lending policies, and building strong relationships with dealerships or other third-party sources to generate loan business. Indirect loan officers play a crucial role in expanding a lender’s reach and increasing loan volume through these indirect channels.

What are the main challenges faced by professionals working in indirect lending roles, and how can they be effectively managed?

Professionals in indirect lending often navigate challenges such as building strong relationships with dealership partners, ensuring compliance with lending regulations, and maintaining high-quality loan portfolios. Effective communication and negotiation skills are crucial when working with dealerships to structure mutually beneficial loan agreements. Additionally, staying updated on regulatory changes and utilizing robust risk assessment tools help manage credit risk and ensure compliance. Collaborating closely with underwriting and credit teams can further streamline processes and enhance loan quality.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Indirect Loan Officer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Indirect Loan Officer, you need a solid understanding of lending practices, credit analysis, and financial regulations, usually supported by a degree in finance or related experience. Familiarity with loan origination systems, credit reporting tools, and compliance software is typically required. Strong relationship-building, negotiation, and communication skills help foster partnerships with dealerships and clients. These skills and qualifications ensure effective loan processing, risk management, and successful collaboration with partners in the indirect lending process.

Job description

SkyOne is seeking a detail-oriented, service-driven Indirect Loan Processor to support our growing indirect lending program. In this role, you'll review, verify, and fund indirect loan applications while ensuring accuracy, compliance, and exceptional service for our dealer partners and members. Working closely with underwriters, dealerships, and internal teams, you'll help deliver a smooth and efficient loan funding process while maintaining high standards of quality and member service. If you're organized, thrive in a fast-paced environment, and enjoy helping others, we'd love to hear from you.
What You'll Do Day-to-Day
As an Indirect Loan Processor, you'll play a key role in supporting SkyOne's indirect lending program by reviewing, processing, and funding consumer loan applications received through dealership partners. On a daily basis, you'll review approved loan packages for accuracy and completeness, verify income, collateral, contract terms, and supporting documentation, and ensure loans meet all credit union policies and regulatory requirements before funding. You'll communicate directly with dealerships and borrowers to obtain missing information, provide funding updates, and resolve documentation issues. In addition, you'll enter and validate loan information within lending and core processing systems, monitor your loan pipeline to ensure timely processing, maintain organized loan files, and collaborate with underwriters and internal teams to facilitate a seamless funding experience. Your success will be measured by your ability to process loans accurately, meet established turnaround times, maintain compliance standards, and deliver exceptional service to both members and dealer partners.
Are You a Good Fit?
You may be an excellent fit for this role if you are highly organized, detail-oriented, and thrive in a fast-paced environment where accuracy matters. You'll enjoy this position if you have a passion for helping members achieve their financial goals, take pride in providing outstanding service, and can effectively manage multiple priorities without sacrificing quality. The ideal candidate is proactive, adaptable, and comfortable working independently while also collaborating closely with colleagues across multiple departments. Strong communication skills, sound judgment, and a problem-solving mindset are essential, as you'll regularly interact with dealerships, borrowers, underwriters, and internal business partners. If you enjoy working in a role that combines operational excellence, relationship management, and compliance accountability, this opportunity may be the perfect fit.
